ill give some background i guess. used to read comics when the marvel 2099 stuff was new.
    used to read:

    marvel:
anything to do with adam warlock, thanos or the infinite gauntlet stuff
    the 2099 books
    spiderman stuff (like maximum carnage)

    dc:
read superman and batman (both in their death to rebirth phases)
spectre and some crisis/zero hour stuff
    watchmen

more than that, but thats the jist

im probably looking for some cosmic stuff like guardians of the galaxy in TPB form ... or stuff like killing joke and hush from batman. im also interested in villains as anti-hero. probably not interested in x-men, but really don't know any recent TPBs.

My two favorite conclusive stories are both written by Grant Morrison: All-Star Superman and Seven Soldiers(aka Seven Soldiers of Victory). ASS(lolol) is 12 issues long, two books. SS is very long, essentially a collection of mini-series with unique stories which all connects at the end. Broken down into 4 pieces. They are must reads as far as superhero comics go.

Fuck it, read Berserk. Start a collection.

Grant Morrison's entire JLA run is the shit. Perhaps the pinnacle of high fantasy superheroing.

Rock of Ages is amazing, probably better than World War III. World War III is at the end of his run right? I think the entire run was leading up to it, so probably best read last. Art is pretty 90's if you can deal with it lol.

The Jonah Hex books are great too, a different flavor, if you want to get away from capes without getting away from superhero comics.

Not a fucking clue if these are in TPB
    100 bullets
The arc where spider-man switches suit to the other 4 (5?) heroes.

Identity crisis was pretty meh, events surrounding it were interesting though.

That show is great. Especially when they dip into obscure things comic book readers love to see.

    Identity Crisis
    Kingdom Come
    Superman: Red Son
Ultimates volume one and two (everything before joe mad)
    Invincible
    Green Lantern: Rebirth
    Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps War
Green Lantern: Blackest Night (Only gets fantastic if you read the prelude and a lot of the other comics surrounding the event).
House of M (I'm like the only person that loved house of m through and through. Everything that has happned on earth since then has been rather meh).
Astonishing X-Men (not sure which series. first perhaps)
    Planet Hulk
    Thor (JMS)

all the ones above are decent if you like superheroes.
The ones below are hit or miss. Hit for me because they are good "superman" stories.

    Superman: Secret Identity
    Superman: Birthright

Don't listen to Ryko, Identity Crisis is pretty awesome. It characterizes heroes as humans and vulnerable.
