I'm looking at getting a Intel Xeon W3680 (xeon equivalent of a 980X).
I'm looking at getting a X58 motherboard(which support Xeons) instead of a server board, because I want easy over-clocking for it.
So here's my question...what determines the ability to support ECC? Motherboard or the CPU?(or both)
This is going to be a mixed use Workstation/Gaming machine, and I'd really like to be able to use ECC ram.
Every FAQ I've read says X58 board XYZ does not support ECC, but they assume you're using an i7, not a Xeon.
Google doesn't give me a straight answer on this, can I buy something like a Gigabyte UD3R, or a Asus Rampage III, etc, and use ECC memory in it if I'm using it with a Xeon?(I know that the ram will work regardless, but can I get the benefit of ECC or will it just run as unregistered DDR3?) Does it depend on the bios/efi? etc.
Hoping someone knows the answer.
