Pretty much, yes. Huge difference between $10 and $100 headphones. Practically no difference between $10 and $100 mic. Get the best headphones you can, then toss in one of those cheap Logitech mics.

As a rule, I'd agree. But Sennheiser PC350s aren't just cheap headphones, they are sennheiser quality. As such, I'll throw in my vote for PC350 as well, about as good as you are going to get if you are looking at a straight up headset. Otherwise, stick with headphone+mic (probably still end up with a sennheiser set anyways).

I've had my PC350s for I think 2 years now? and absolutely zero signs of wear or damage at all. They are like virtually indestructible compared to the cheap build quality ones I used to grab as an afterthought every couple months. Only downside I could mention is that they can get a little hot if you aren't used to a closed ear design, they really do completely encompass your ears. Once you're used to them though, you'll never really notice.

I used to go through a $50 Logitech Headset about once a year. It was always something with those god damn things. The cable would short out in various places so one of the ears would go out, or the mic would go out, or it would only go out if you tilted your head a certain way. It got so bad that one time I had a headset where the mic went out but the sound was perfect and then another headset where the sound was fucked but the mic worked great. My solution? I plugged both those pieces of shit in and laid the one with the working mic on my desk and wore the other one. I had similar problems with the Razer headset. It had great sound at first but it died within the first month. Replaced it and bought my Sennheiser and I will never, ever go back. I've only had 2 minor issues with this headset. One, the little clip on the back of the volume control snapped off from wear (can't really help that) and two, I used it so much the cushions on the earpieces were practically falling apart. One call to Seinnheser and I was happy to find out I could replace them fairly cheaply and I had it within a few short days. In short, if there's anyone out there on the fence, stop buying garbage ass headsets and spend the extra money now. It'll pay off in the long run for sure.

Oh, definitely. I just meant headphone+mic vs headset in general. Sennheisers are fuckwin; been using mine every day for like 5 years now and they're still in perfect condition other than replacement cables.
