BG Pets: Flooring for pets/dogs (w/stairs)

Hey all, since the last grab for pet advice worked out so well I thought I'd throw this BG's way and see what turned up. The situation is that I'm replacing the flooring in the living room (including a flight of stairs) that is currently carpet and want to know what my options are.

I talked to Pikarya about this months ago in the pet-pics thread when it was just a random thought and at the time laminate flooring w/runaway rugs seemed like a good idea. Currently, though, I've realized the flooring on the stairs matches the living room and is going to have to be replaced as well, which seems like a pretty big problem since I have no idea what else besides carpet would work (safely) for a flight of stairs that my Lab uses often. Any suggestions?

Also, if carpet is the only feasible option, are there any specific types or styles I should look into? I'm kind of overwhelmed by this because I don't even know what colors to start looking at, much less the bigger details lol. All I've found online are mostly blogs that contradict each other on almost every flooring type. Thanks for any help!

I think after a few times of falling up and down the stairs, your dog would figure it out. I think they make really long rugs you could put down the whole flight of stairs too, if you still want linoleum.

Figure out what? I want him to be able to walk up and down them without slipping or hurting his joints over time or falling down them at all, especially with a solid floor material.

How stable would rugs for stairs be? I'm just wondering if something like rubber grips used for runaway rugs on a flat floor would be enough to keep it in place with a dog rushing up and down them.
