Happens to me and I do this. Usually works the second time around. I'm using a 5850.

came across something weird, it can be (and probably is) chalked up to the "sometimes it works" thing, but 5 times in a row with the same result warrants a little test (especially since I have 10 attempts in a row with no system changes that failed to load properly)

1, Tried to start it in windowed mode, (1280x720), got stuck on the post-logo black screen as usual.
2, switched to 1024x768, out of sheer frustration, and suddenly it loaded properly.
3, switched back to 1280x720, got stuck on blackscreen.
4, tried 1280x720 a couple of times no go.
5, switched back to 1024x768, and got in again.
7, logged out and tried to log in with same settings, no go
8, switched to 1280x720 with fail
9, back to 1024x768 and got in

and rinse and repeat a few times. am inclined to consider it random chance, but considering the weird spaghetti code SE served in FFXI, maybe this can be helpful information for someone significantly more technically competent than me.

(minisidenote: got 2x 1024x768 in a row, damned if I know!)

Had this problem for a few days now... I'm usually able to launch after a couple of tries (so bloody annoying as I have to use my token each time) but today I just can't bypass this problem, 30~ attempts now!

I'm having the exact same problem: I get the login screen, enter my password and token password, and then I get to the screen with the big red PLAY button. After clicking that, the screen goes to the SE logo and "ping" sound effect, then it fades to black and stays there indefinitely. I still see the hand cursor and it responds to my mouse movement. This problem only occurs for windowed mode; the game runs fine in full screen (but I'm not really willing to play this game full screen). =\

It is strange because I've been playing the game, in windowed mode, just fine since Thursday 9/23. The last time I successfully got the game to work, in windowed mode, was this past Wednesday 9/29. (I was too busy to play on 9/30 and 10/1.) The black screen problem started yesterday, Saturday 10/2. I have not consciously made any changes to my computer over these past few days. I know my computer should be capable of running the game... unless the game was patched?

Try downloading Ultramon if you are using more than one monitor http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/download.asp
    worked for me.

For you I would suggest running Windows Update and installing the Internet Explorer 8 if you haven't already. Not guaranteeing this will fix the problem, but it looks like a browser compatibility problem TBH.

For the OP, update your video drivers. Same thing happened to me during beta and updated video drivers fixed it.

Happens to me once every 5 or so log-ins. Closing out the program and re-starting it fixed it every time.

Not using more than one monitor (Often) - plugged into my tv to show a friend what the game looked like. Got black screen after playing fine since launch. Downloaded Ultramon as suggested above and starting working again. Some tell me why? Or tell my why I have three instances of my video card in my ATI Catalyst Control Center?

Black screen after SE logo [FIXED]

I just wanted to share this with you all. I originally posted this at FFXIVCore, but I cannot yet post URLs:

    /topic/26250-black-screen-after-se-logo-fixed/page__mode__show

    (You'll need to add the HTTP : // w w w . ffxivcore . com / at the beginning.)

    =================================

Ok, for those of you having the issue with the "Black Screen of Death" after the SE logo (game doesn't load the white 'start' page with the FFXIV logo), I've fixed it on my setup. After reading many, many threads of users with this issue I contacted SE and had no useful help given... so I decided to try everything under the sun to get this fixed. I tried changing the NIC binding on my machine, adding the *.square-enix.com site to "trusted sites" in I.E., changing my resolution and texture/shadow settings... all to no avail.

Here's what I did to fix this:

In the FFXIV program directory, I set all of the executeables (.exe's) to "Run As Administrator". In my testing, it is most important to set the ffxivboot.exe and ffxivlogin.exe to "Run as Administrator", but it may be safe to set all of the .exe's in this folder to run this way.

Also, set the ffxivgame.exe application to run in "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" compatibility mode.

Ever since then, I've been able to run FFXIV in Windowed mode EVERY SINGLE TIME!

I know this was a very irritating issue so I hope this helps!

Tried what the above said. Worked but then my vent microphone activation key wouldn't work. So I said screw it. Resorting to restart my computer each time I need to open ff14 again.

I have this issue when I tick "Play sound when application is in background" in the FFXIV config. No idea how its linked to the issue...

If its ticked on your systems, try running w/o it

Didn't solve the problem for me, not entirely that is. Still get about 1-3 black screens before I can successfully log in, it's better than the 10-100 I had before though.

I had this problem before using FFXIVWindower and enabling FlipEx. Now I get it maybe once every two days. I'm running Windows 7 with an 8800gts (i know, how do I play?)

Found another "solution" (a placebo more likely) for this problem, for some reason I seem to get past the black screen every time I double click the ffxivgame.exe and starting the game from ffxivboot.exe shortly after that, dunno if it's just plain luck or what, but it has seemed to do the trick for me, unlike anything else mentioned in this topic. Weird.

I tried installing FFXIV on my laptop. It installed fine but crashes on the initial load. I wanted to see if anyone had any insight. Thanks.
