Personally anyways, I found the menus and so on much friendlier with the mouse than with my laptop keyboard ( inb4 lolLaptop ). Of course, it being a software mouse and my woefully inferior hardware made using mouse pretty much impossible. So yes, all in all this is yet another Hardware Mouse Please.

This just in, just because you do it doesn't mean everyone else does. People complain about it because it's broken, simple as that.

If it's broken, don't use it. This shit is intended for a gamepad, just like every other FF game. Every other MMO can use a mouse, this one doesn't. Simple as that.

This forum is going to be so epic on the 22nd. The QQ will be stronger than when SE made you require a light ore to be able to re-do AA-BCNM and people wasted hours of their life waiting for the full moon to hit not knowing they needed the ore and finding out they were now x5 the cost on the AH.

Wrong. If its broken, the company needs to fix it. Period. You don't defend a company's faulty part of a product by telling people not to use part of the product. You tell the company to fix the problem.

I'm not going to tell anyone who has a problem with the mouse (that SE themselves added, not the people who are simply using it) to just not use it. If SE is going to put something in the game, put it in right, or take it out and deal with the negative responses that come from not having multiple options for movement and control.

I want the problems fixed by the company that I'm paying; I don't want to hear a bunch of "if you don't like it, leave it" rhetoric from people who aren't using the flawed device in question. Its too convenient to say that. What if it was the gamepad that was fucked up? Could you still make the same snide remarks so easily?

Is there really any doubt about that? The comment sure as hell doesn't seem smart to me, but it also doesn't seem to be stupid. It seems to be common sense. Unless I am missing something obvious... in which case I would appreciate being filled in, at which point I will apologize for my stupid comment and 'lurkmoar'.

Yes I could. I would say 'Don't use a gamepad, use a mouse. Simple as that'.

FFS: do you bitch that you can't play Street Fighter with a mouse? What about WoW? I can't use my gamepad on that game effectively... I didn't stop playing either of these games because I couldn't use my 'human interface' of choice. You can play Command and Conquer with either a mouse or a gamepad... guess which sucks? It's the gamepad. I don't bitch about that, I just use a mouse.

Sorry, it was a leve reward. One attempt it was a Willow Fishing Rod, the next attempt it was Cotton Scarf (Blue), and the last attempt it was a Willow Fishing Rod again.

I don't know why people complain about the mouse. I never used the mouse in XI.

Because a lot of the game's interface is more mouse-oriented than XI, and any PC game now days that supports a mouse (i.e doesn't completely turn it off) should work well with it. It's incredibly easy to to implement a decent hardware mouse, and it's even easier in their case since it's a windows only game (DXInput can do all the heavy lifting for you).

The fact that they went around that, did a software mouse, and keep trying to make that better instead of just going with a hardware mouse (insert "polishing the turd" metaphor here) is what pisses people off. It's a bunch of unnecessarily wasted effort on their part, for no apparent reason.

In that reddit thread that was posted earlier there was a brief discussion about the software mouse and someone made the comment that SE went with a software mouse to make it harder for people to bot. I don't ever remember hearing this, has it ever been confirmed anywhere?

I hope that hasn't been confirmed by SE as that's the most stupid excuse ever for bot preventative. It's not like the a bot would even use the mouse to begin with.

Playing near gridania. Soloing was sucking. Teamed up with a conjurer from my guild and had a blast doing two man content. Professions are a blast--though the system for handling inventory and for dealing with merchants (and what they stock) needs to be massively improved.

Still, game has been fun. The daily patches seem to be making improvements--or maybe that's just outleveling other people and leaving the lag behind.

It helps to have at least another class like 5... :\ That's what I've found anyway... I was able to kill funguar at lvl 6 Con with second wind equiped...forgot what my physical was...I like gridania because it has way more mobs than Uldah area... ><

I someone manage to find some in Uldah though...

I think the coding was done in a way to optimize the use of a gamepad, like a PS3 controller, because that is the format SE is most comfortable with, and because they are planning on launching the game cross-platform. The software mouse will be the most accessible method for most PS3 (and perhaps, if Microsoft lets them, Xbox) users to move their cursors.

TBH I hate the software mouse, but it really isn't the problem with the UI. The problem is how you interact with the UI. With a mouse you have to move down and click between screens.. with a controller you just hit a facepad button.

A controller makes the UI much more intuitive, and this is simply the direction the developers are going to go.

Add a hardware mouse, please. But it isn't going to make the UI that much more 'mouse-friendly', it will just speed up your frustration at not playing with a gamepad.

EDIT: Back to the point of this thread, Random Question: What crafts are people finding useful/useless so far? Is blacksmithing worth the effort or should I stick with something cheap like cooking/alchemy?

The coding was ripped straight from FFXI, which was a console game first. Crystal tools my ass. Its no secret why the mouse lags behind the controller in optimization. The point is that if a company is going to release a game on both the PC and consoles, both forms of control should be equally adequate to play the game. This is especially important if said company is releasing the PC version first.

Nobody was surprised about the controls of XI when it hit PC because it was console first. If SE is that adamant about console-first, then they should have simply stated that the game is best played with a controller, and offered one as part of their CE, instead of a bunch of "making of" vids with maps, bags, and other fluff schwag.
