    Wireless Router Help

Hey Everyone - I am currently in the middle of swapping roommates and unfortunately the last two that just left took the amazing router with them. I need some help now - I bought a Belkin N150 (omg bad decision) to hold me over until I could actually find one that doesn't drop out on a daily basis.

So, I am looking for suggestions. I went through Newegg to read through reviews, but really couldn't get a grasp of which were the viable options. I spoke with some linkshell members who suggested Linksys routers or just a simple DLink, but those seem to be hit pretty hard on reviews.

I am looking for something to accomodate 2 laptops, both vista, one apple laptop, and one asus netbook. Price range is preferrably from 30-50 (could go higher). Really looking for something that would require little to no resets.

Comcast provides free Cisco (Linksys) routers.

Depending on where you live, what they might provide to you may vary.

    ^ What they gave me.

Obviously you'll have to give it back after you quit your contract with Comcast, though. Stay away from D-Link, Netgear, & Belkin routers. They make good switches, just not routers.

I recently upgraded to an ASUS RT-N16 wireless router and flashed it with the Tomato USB firmware. They are an excellent pair, especially if you like a little more granularity when it comes to control over your network. The ASUS router also sports a lot more RAM and flash memory than most other routers meaning it can handle better custom firmware and more concurrent connections (huge if you're big into torrenting). Its preloaded firmware is pretty weak, but the unit itself is great.

    Slight hijack on your thread:

I've been looking for a wireless router too. I'm thinking about getting either this or this and putting dd-wrt on it. From reading the reviews on newegg and amazon, they're equally terrible routers without some form of custom firmware.

Two of my main concerns are getting similar speeds compared to what I have without a router, and having access throughout my home. My connection is about 20-25 Mbit/s, and I know that 802.11g may get speeds up to 54 Mbit/s, but that's usually not the case. I live in a smallish house, but I don't know if 802.11g will have enough range to cover all of it, or if I will experience a diminishing connection the further away I am.

The routers look solid with dd-wrt installed, with the exception of v2 of the second one not being supported. Anyone have experience on dealing with connection speed or range with dd-wrt on these particular routers?
