I don't see what that has to do with anything. Story is not exclusive to online RPG's, MMORPG's nor single player games. They can exist in any game. Which is why I'm not talking about story. Or music. Or graphics.

But you don't make a social MMO with convenient gameplay nor a convenient online RPG with superb socialization.

It has to be conveniant for its playerbase by offering gameplay dynamics they enjoy, instead of simulating the real world.
Wrong. It does not have to be that way.

An online RPG still does that better, by the way. What reason does anyone have to play an MMORPG when it is done so much better in those kind of games? Answer me, Kaylia. I don't see any reason to play WoW when there are games that just do things better, are more convenient and offer BETTER gameplay dynamics.

But it is clear that many people like their shitty gameplay. It's just not for me, and I find it hilarious that you are defending it.

Sure, you could have a sandbox mmo built by its playerbase from scratch, but is it really better than a game designed around a few more limitations? No, not really.
For the people who like those kind of games? Sure, they are better (although pure "sandbox" MMO's are doomed to fail- themepark or bust.)

It is certain that these kind of games are not for everyone. Not for most people, even. Online RPG's are much more appealing, I admit.

But it's still better to divide them than what we're getting now. Companies try to do both well, but in the end they all fall short. Not as convenient. Not as good gameplay. Not as much socialization. They're failures.

And you contradict yourself when you say they sacrifice sociality, because at the beginning of your post, you said you can do it in any game with cooperative PVE.
That was poorly worded, I admit. What I meant to say was cooperation. A part of socialization, yet not enough for someone who wants to be a part of a living world. Cooperative PVE games do sacrifice this for their convenient hubs and instances, npc based economies, combat focused gameplay, blahblah.

I wish people would stop asking for an AH, this game doesnt need one. A good search function will do wonders.

An auction house system is a search function + 'buy it now' button. Am I getting whooshed here or are folks still insisting an AH would be a bad addition to an MMO?

Market Wards with a good search function would function amazingly similar to Windurst/Bastok/Sand'Orian/Jeuno AHs. You had to travel to those cities to use them. We've been jaded by Tavnazia/AhtUrghan/Nashmau/Jeuno linked AHs... which did not happen until much later in the game's life.

No one is saying an AH would be a "bad" addition, it would just be unrealistic to pine for a clone of XI's AH because it would be conflicting specifically with what the developers are trying to do.

When guild locations begin to matter more, when people are high enough to really need Master support, we'll see the Market Wards at least somewhat form their niche markets... Fish/Foodstuffs/Armor pieces/bait/etc. for Limsa Lominsa. Just like it was more likely to find fabrics, bones, and ingredients in Windurst and not so much at all in Bastok/San d'Oria.

It's clear SE is adamant against an AH, so why not just ask for an easier implementation of a search function for the 'AH' system thats all ready in place.
I'll say it again, it was the only good thing PSU had, and itll work fine here.

I don't think you understand what the word 'jaded' means.

That an AH is against SE's 'wishes' or 'design goals' throws into question those very wishes and design goals, because they're both in the opposite direction of what potential customers already know and like from the rest of the MMO market.

Also, having to travel between windurst/san d'oria/bastok for vendor-restricted trade goods fucking sucked and defending it behind a veil of 'local flavor' is weak.

Because that's not what the players want. If they're gonna add a search feature to the market wards, why not just take that extra step and add in the AH, since it'd be doing the same thing essentially.

...because an impersonal, centralized Auction House is exactly what they do not want. If we can get similar results to XI's mutliple AHs just by searching local Retainers, that keeps them happy and us happy for the most part. Until content requires us to travel so much that separate Market Wards (AHs) become too big of an inconvenience.

What? That's exactly what 'jaded' means.

The older an MMORPG gets, the more convenient it has to become to keep people playing as they grow weary of the traveling required by increased content. Most people (XI players) have become dulled by these conveniences and expect even a brand-new game with economies still in their infancies to not involve any effort because they are just used to sitting at an Auction House counter in Jeuno/Whitegate to get everything they need. I don't know why people are still stuck thinking this is FFXI-2 HD.

An immediate centralized and impersonal AH is not going to happen. Why wah wah about it if they can emulate the same effect of XI only having 4 separate AHs for the first half of its lifespan? It wasn't a big deal then, why is it a big deal now?

    because yer jaded homie.

p.s. just to be clear, market wards suck until they fix them. I do not condone 900 retainers jammed in a room selling 3 shards or a walnut each.

What the fuck "becoming part of a living world" even mean? Is your life so empty that you want to make up for it in a game?

This huge "living world" you're talking about never transcend the guild or linkshell. You're not a special snowflake, every other players will be doing the same shit as you do if the game is remotely balanced. The few games that manage to pull that shit are the one where an handful of people manage to monopolize something and gain some notoriety for it...but is it really what you mean by "becoming part of a living world"?

I'm curious Hyan, in all this bullshit you're spouting - have you ever been challenged by a Single Player RPG? I mean, I haven't played a lot of them, I'll be honest, but I found them all boring as fuck because none of them presented even the smallest challenge. I couldn't even find a way to challenge myself (lets say, competing on meters on WoW, lowmanning in FFXI, etc). You can sit here and say you see no reason to play an MMO, and yet on the other hand, I've lost all desire to ever play a single player RPG in the past 15 years because that was about the last time that I was even half challenged by 1. WTF is the point of playing single player RPGs? Story? Much rather read a good book. Graphics? Rather watch a good movie or TV series. And before you go over the top - I'm not saying that all or most or even aspects of MMOs are challenging, but having other players to compete against is a challenge in itself. Past that, there are some things that are at least somewhat challenging (well, maybe not in FFXI, but most people feel WoW hardmodes are to some extent).

Furthermore, the first few times you do an encounter in WoW, I'd have to say it is the best gameplay I have ever experienced in a video game. The fights are engaging, require you to pay attention, react, optimize, etc. That being said, I don't currently play WoW because in the end it's very repetitive doing the same encounters for 5 months straight (then again, in FFXI you do the same shit for 5 years straight), and furthermore, outside of 6 hrs per week, it just gets boring.

Really, we all have our opinions, you are more than welcome to yours, but I'm sorry, it's just another opinion out there that has no more validity as a universal truth than anyone else's.

I'm not trying to be a smartass, but I think that's the basic premise behind fantasy role-playing. Whether it be table-top, MMO, or what-have-you.

You're describing people coming from FFXI, which has convenient auction house and travel systems in place, to FFXIV, which has none, and being angry. The word you're looking for is "spoiled".

"Jaded" is more like when people "translate" FFXI announcements from SE language to english. It implies cynicism due to experience.

I consider people spoiled because it never mattered in XI and now it does. Overindulging in a convenience, that wasn't there to begin with, and then having it removed leaves people "jaded" as far as I am concerned.

People were content with the 4 different Auction Houses in XI, and the inconveniences involved with the travel between them for different materials/specializations. As the game grew much older, and content became highly centralized around places like Jeuno, Tavnazia Safehold, and Whitegate. To avoid the resulting increase of the inconveniences of separate marketplaces via excessive travel, they linked the Auction Houses between those places.

At this time, I don't think there is an immediate and urgent need for linking all 3 city-states' markets as they all house different guild specializations. Not to mention, instantaneous travel between the 3 city-states is readily available for everyone. I think there's an immediate but temporary inconvenience because people are working on tons of different classes at once because it's easy to do with the basic materials and tools that are available, to get the lower-rank abilities. When people get past this part and start generally focusing on one primary fighting class and one primary gathering/crafting class, there won't be a massive need for the markets to house every material. Optimal attribute builds will be more important, requiring time to redistribute before attempting important syntheses or leves.... time that might just be spent traveling (via chocobo, airship, or anima).

A lot needs to be done about the Market Wards to make them function at all, but I feel like once they become organized (forcefully) and searchable, they will function much like the Auction Houses before Chains of Promathia and Treasures of Aht Urghan. We have yet to have a centralized locale for content. Everyone's main quest lines are tied to where they started and, chances are, their class-specific quests will be for the classes they chose to be near the guild for.

While I don't really mind the lack of an AH, the current system is a pure clusterfuck as already stated. A search function would be perfectly fine, and it could easily scan strings of text in the user's native language and match them with whoever's selling the desired item. Would it kill them to have a mail/delivery system of sorts?

The sparseness of suitable mobs for a particular level range is annoying. It's going to be an even bigger clusterfuck come Thursday. You're lucky though if you can find a cave (or some other secluded place) with 3-4 mobs to beat on with fast repops. Also, a mob that can damage you for upwards of 10x your health (let alone a pack of them) has no business being in a starter zone. Hell, it doesn't even have a place in an endgame setting unless of course there was some mechanic to circumventing it.

I know this is not a thread about complaints per se, but here goes anyways:

    * Better Crossfile/SLI profiles and support. I mean even with an 5970 and an overclocked i7 I get low FPS and need to turn things down quite a bit to make it bearable in town.

    * Character Search (/sea)

    * Linkshell and Tells filters in the message box

    * Stop make my character stop running when I browse a bazaar

    * Market ward search

I haven't played that much but those are the things that seemed amiss to me.

That is one of the things that needs to be fixed, bad.

    There needs to be:

A limit to the number of retainers in each ward.

A way to search for items, listing each retainer and the quantity and price they have. (lower prices will obviously sell first to the frugal, but higher quantities might sell at higher prices to those who are not patient enough to visit more than one retainer)

A way to search for wanted items, listing each retainer and the quanity they need and the reward they offer. (higher rewards and lower quantities will be sold first, natural market shit, etc.)

A way to easily find said retainer, highlight, teleport straight to them, etc.

A way to encourage ward organization by bazaar contents.

And I'm too tired of talking about market wards to go on, but I feel like it would feel much like a physical Auction House instead of only menus and lists, which I think is SE's primary goal. For us, it allows some ease of finding items, as well as creative selling. You want to buy this Hempen Cowl? How about some Hempen Fents to go along with it? Batteries not included.

When coming up with ways to make the Market Wards and crafter/customer interactions work, someone accused me of just "theorycrafting shitty AHs." That is what has to be done here because we all know they aren't going to just slap some windows/counters into the outside of the Adventurer's Guild.

There is 1, it needs to be lowered.

I'd be okay with that, but it's just a more complex AH system...

A way to search for wanted items, listing each retainer and the quanity they need and the reward they offer. (higher rewards and lower quantities will be sold first, natural market shit, etc.)
Not to mention from what I heard, you have to have an item to even list it as wanted? And if you list some shards as wanted, you can only receive a # of shards to match, not unlimited...
