    Setting up access point

Ok, so I got my new usb access point in the mail today. It has no instructions or anything just the driver. So I fire it up and give it an SSID. I'm able to connect to it, but it doesn't give me any connection.

Now, is it mandatory that my connection is LAN or does it only matter that my computer is connected to the internet? Basically I'm just using as a repeater because my laptop is the only thing in the house that gets a good connection. My uncle's laptop and my wii range from poor-mediocre.

How can I set it up to where it counts my laptop's connection?

Are you saying that you are attempting to use your USB access point to turn your laptop into a repeater?

Provided this is what you're saying, check this thread out, it may answer that statement: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=566156

Let's say you are using a router and it has wireless capability. You are having issues connecting other wireless devices to your network. Well, the obvious answer to this would be to boost the signal, and for that you would need a repeater. I am not sure if a laptop can act as one, maybe if you do something like Mobile ad hoc network it may work, but it seems like too much work. Me personally would go out an physically buy a repeater and connect it with the router, and then have your devices connect this way.

For a visual representation of what I am talking about look at this link:Wireless Networking

If your router is not wireless ready? then just get a Wireless Access Point device and connect it to the router.

I hope this can answer your question.

edit: You can find wireless repeaters here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...peater&x=0&y=0

by "connect to the router" I think he meant wirelessly, or it'd be pointless for a repeater/signal booster. You can use a regular router for that though, depending on the model. This is what I do:

If it's a USB dongle you can almost guarantee he's going to be setting up ICS on his system to get it to work. It wouldn't really be a bridge/repeater kind of thing.

Leeching the connection usually makes it for more difficult troubleshooting. Of course there may be a way to do it, but I am more well versed in troubleshooting a network with full access.

You're supposed to put it in the attic and run a cable to an antenna on the roof
