Email Blocked In Work

Hey All,

Just a quick one. Email providers such as Yahoo / Hotmail / Gmail etc are all blocked in work due to the risk of virus etc.

I rely heaviley on my gmail account for communication for non work related tasks etc. Im just curious is there a provider or website that can bypass blocks such as this? Something similar maybe to web messengers etc?

ib4 - shouldnt be doing non work stuff on work time etc. I like to do all this sort of stuff on my lunch / breaks / when i have no work etc.

If its not possible its not possible thats grand just curious.

It's possible, however if your work is that strict the use of proxies is probably not going to work either. Do you have work email? If so you could always just set your gmail up to forward to that address so you can read your email at least, and fight back against the obviously retarded SysAdmin

A word of warning: these things are blocked for a reason, no matter how reasonably harmful they may or may not be. Circumventing them is often a violation of company policy and there can be consequences, the severity of which varies from place to place. Tread lightly.

The best solution for personal email and browsing at work is to get a smartphone. It'll save you a lot of trouble with admins in the long run.

You can try to find a proxy site that isn't blocked, but if your sysadmins are in the least bit competent they'll know if you're using a proxy. It's just not worth it to try to circumvent it.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Its not something i want to loose my job over. I was just thinking if it was just something like web messenger where a website allowed me to sign into my gmail in such a fashion then i would do it.

I wouldnt want to do it and it not be allowed or by means of specifically breaking the rules.

I have an iphone but its the biggest pain in the arse to send emails from, i need a special dialing wand or something my fingers are too fat...

the admin in question is obviously not very competent as their solution to problems is "BLOCK ALL ACCESS", there are numerous ways to prevent viruses, that is NOT the reason you cant access personal emails, this was a demand handed down from some corporate dick shit to keep employees "focused" on work, which all these measures really do is violently slash morale.

eg: i work at a VERY large global pharmaceutical, and basically the only things you cant access on the corporate LAN is porn... everything else is completely OK, and we have no major issues with any type of viruses... sure sometimes people get adware and dont call in about it for months (ugh) but thats rare. and the people here dont really complain about their jobs or anything like that, in fact its part of the policy that checking personal email and using the internet for personal use is just fine as it promotes good work/life synergy

ive also worked on the other side, where everyone had to focus on work, and work alone, bg was blocked and various other innocent sites, people HATED working there, everyone complained all the time, and no one wanted to do anything to excel in their job as they got nothing for it, thus morale sucked and everyone hated the company and everyone else.

I'll stop ranting now, my main point is that "you cant access personal email to prevent viruses" is bullshit, and this is ALL based on conservative corporate executives who think they know how people work

Corporate policy, it's wonderful isn't it? I agree with you, but it usually isn't up to the sysadmin to decide what to and what not to block. Just because he has to listen to an executive and "block everything" doesn't mean he's incompetent at his job

edit: the main point of my rant was that corporate policies on internet usage seriously need to be given a new look... I've worked in both extremes, and i can tell you that the liberal "use it, we dont care" has a billion times higher morale and desire to work than the conservative "omfg you're on the internet?!?!? you're a terrible person, you're fired" side
