From what I've seen from doing botany:

A tree starts out with 5 yields (meaning you can try to get up to 5 items on the tree).

If say two people are on the tree and person A finishes 1 yield it'll say "4 times left" (or w/e the exact wording is) for both people.

    However on the last yield:

I've had it where I finished on the 5th yield, but other people got to finish theirs too because they already started. And vice versa. Basically once you start the minigame, you can't get kicked out of it, and can still get items off of it.

So you may feel like you're competing, but in all honesty you're not. By the time you finish a tree and hit Arbor Call (the one that tells you the closest tree), there's always another up. You can basically harvest non-stop even if others are sharing the trees. Basically, zero competition.

As long as spawn points are plentiful then that is tolerable. It just sucks if you spend an hour trying to gather and someone is claiming all the points and you are just wasting your time. I wonder how long it will be before we see cries for a "code of gatherers" regarding sharing points or leaving a claimed point alone etc.

Really, my description doesn't do it justice though. As much as you may think you won't like it, I'd give it a shot just so you can see what I'm talking about. I really don't think there's every going to be a competition issue unless by happenstance the 4000+ people on a server one day decide to all go harvesting in one zone at the same time.

My main gathering class will be fishing, I might grab a hatchet though for when I am out running around and pass a gathering point. So I am not overly worried about it.

I wouldn't say it's *required* but it does make things easier...from what I seen from my friends, they've been really frustrated by the lag mostly...dealing with the Inventory just to NPC shit is a pain in the ass...But I think once everything's been optimized and the lag is gone, shit will be cash-

I've noticed this too. Surely whoever submitted the recipe knows where to get the materials. Can't really blame people for being secretive when it comes to gil however.

not necessarily. a lot of the recipes have come from doing guild levies (both as rewards, and as things to make to complete the levie). I'll use maple longbow as an example. There's something required called a linen bowstring. Now from researching it (when I was trying to make one), in CB you could buy them from an npc, but in OB the npc no longer sells it.

Ontop of, what would be assumed that would make it (4 flax) doesn't work. I think they took it out so people wouldn't know how to make them.

Also, other recipes that worked in CB don't work or have changed in OB.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them are changed on release.

Good points. I discovered the linen bowstring issue when researching the craft. But it appears you can buy that weapon cheap anyway so no point making it.

I hope they don't change the recipes. All my planning would be wasted.

Not really; while mining yields a lot of goodies ore-wise, you need a goddamn CRYSTAL, not a shard, to make nuggets. Which is ridiculous.

Where do you get crystals then? I tried farming fireflies with maxed elemental fire stat but got like 5 in an hour.... lots of shards. help?

well I wasn't really directing it at those in particular. My hubby was trying out blacksmithing and ya he was getting pissed off too about the crystal thing. That currently only effects goldsmithing and blacksmithing atm though. I don't think any other craft requires crystals. (for low level synthing that is).

However, we did read somewhere that in closed beta alchemists could turn shards into crystals. That was removed for open and they can only turn crystals into shards atm. I would hope that either they're going to change the crystal thing as it's putting a huge disadvantage for those two crafts, or they're going to put the alch recipe back in on release.

You can get crystals uncommonly from mobs that drop the element you're looking for. Killing Puks usually gives wind shards, but every so often you'll get a crystal. I assume if you find a fire mob you can get crystals from them. I assume the higher level you get the more common they become.

It's a huge pain, but I guess it means that DoW/M aren't left out.

I've gotten earth crystals from slaughtering lowbie shit outside of Ul'dah, but we're talking two or three. Nothing on scale with what you'd need to effectively make use of all the ore you get from mining.

As far as Smithing, Armor, GS, etc.: the weird thing I've noticed is that it seems easier to take component parts and make a thing with it than it is to make the components. I'm a rank 12 armorer, and I'll explode bronze buckles 8 out of 10 tries, but if I'm making something with bronze buckles, it's no problem whatsoever.

Brass buckles are my fucking nemesis. Everything I want to make requires brass fucking buckles. BRASS BUCKLES. I CANNOT MAKE YE BUCKLES. THEY ARE MY WHITE WHALE AND FROM HELL'S HEART I SKEET SKEET AT THEE.

This happens with me with carpentry too. I have a hard time making the maple planks for my shields even though I never break shields (unless I risk a touch up -.-;;;; ).

I have a guess, but haven't been able to test it effectively yet.

I think that components are part of magic crafting, and the actually products are regular synths. Unfortunately, I've been able to find a ton of +craftmanship gear, but very little + magic crafting gear. So I can't stack +magic to test it.

Some of the canvas mage-y type gear from rank 20 leves have mag. crafting on it; I got stuck with a pink canvas monstrosity that I wear to craft which makes me hate blowing up brass squares even more. Because I'm wearing fucking pink.

I'm not sure what the deal with that is, like I don't know if I could consistently make bronze ingots at this point, but if it is a magical crafting vs. regular flavor that'd be pretty interesting.

ya only reason why I guess it is because of exactly what you said. I think I'm sitting at 18 craftmanship and only like 6 magic craftmanship. and it's hard to make the components but easy to make the final synths. once I get more I can actually see if it makes a difference.

I'll check the stats on my shit later today and let know you if there's something to aim for as far as stacking mag. craft.

I think botany nodes work differently. As for mining, there are limited number of attempts to each spot. So as long as there are enough left, a single site can accommodate many miners. It will only collapse and disappear once that number has been exhausted. There really isn't much competition because there are plenty of nodes available and I haven't run into the situation where there isn't any up at all (except if you're in a zone that simply do not have the nodes appropriate for your rank).

Not to debunk your theory but it's not unusual that a component require a higher rank in the craft than the items that are made with said component. For example, I estimate undyed hempen cloth to be about a rank 10 synthesis (you need to be that high to have a good chance of succeeding). However, a lot of the hempen stuff that require cloths have a much lower requirement, around 5-8, to make. It doesn't seem to make sense, but that's just how it works out. Another example, table salt require about 12 alchemy and 5 cooking, but you can use table salt in making salted cod and grilled carp starting at 1 cooking.

I normally don't craft in MMOs, but there is something frustrating but yet addicting in FFXIV crafting.

Edit: Hey, just noticed you're from Mira Mesa, I'm just down the road from you in La Jolla/UTC.
