FFXI was a grind. Just like a MMO, bottom line.

I thought the video was informative and explained the system clearly, right until the very end when the fanboy-itis crept in and eliminated any rapport I had with the author. Fatigue was designed for a game that encouraged switching jobs. That's it. There's nothing special about an xp system built with game mechanics in mind, much how theres nothing special about someone pumping your gas at a full-serve station. There was a job and it was done. I just don't like the inference we should 'praise' SE for this wonderful opportunity to be 'free'.

I can only speak for myself, but I fully intend to change jobs often to take advantage of the leve system, cross-class abilities, and early market mechanics. To that end, even if I could play 40 hours a week, I can't see Fatigue impacting my gaming in any real way. If your approach to jobs is like-minded, there's no reason for feeling punished, upset, or, especially, that SE is somehow being unethical.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Pretty much sums it up for me, though I think we come to completely different conclusions with the same statement.

I tell you: go for a run and I will pay you $100 for every mile you go. However after you run a certain distance, I'm going to beat you with a fucking bat until you're unconscious and then proceed to violate you with a barbwire dildo. Odds are you're not going to be too happy with my proposal. Then I tell you that the 'certain distance' has a threshold that resets on a weekly basis, and the threshold is currently set at 5000 miles. Tada, indifference and you're off to the races! That doesn't make the system any less absurd.

Well that was insightful! Although I previously wasn't even aware of such a system, this puts my mind at ease as I shall be one of those casual players this time around. I also got the impression that this means less grinding. Although it'll still take a while to get to a high level, at least now I can spend that time waiting on my fatigue to reset and do something productive!

It really is alot kinder to people who can't dedicate weeks to the game. A few hours here, an hour there.

On that end, I've got bad news...

I don't need to "do research" to figure out how much of a grind it is to get to LV50; I simply have to remember what it was like when I leveled to 50! And this was in a version of the game with utsusemi, teleports, stealth, refresh, etc.
You sucking has nothing to do with anything, even when I was in NA beta, it was proven that 50 in a matter of weeks was possible... hell, there were multiple level 50s in the first month of the beta test.
One of em was a damn BST and Beastmaster has never been able to solo faster than people could level in parties.

Me and everyone else, right? I don't exactly see a chorus of people joining up on your "1-50 is so easy" tour.

You also seem to have the topic confused: nowhere did I claim that no-lifers who want to play 20 hours a day couldn't get to LV50 in "a matter of weeks". They got there by grinding their asses off, which is the entire point.

[...]even when I was in NA beta, it was proven that 50 in a matter of weeks was possible...
So, for the record: are you claiming that you had a LV50 character in retail FFXI, prior to December 2003?

Ok, so. According to your logic... if attaining a certain level is possible in a specific amount of time, it can't be a "grind."

    Wat? Are you high?

If beta means retail, then sure.
    You fucking moron.

And no, FFXI's NA beta did not magically work on some different ruleset than the real game, and don't even bring up zilart because zilart content was locked until near the end of the beta test.

It's not really some kinda hardcore grind if people are hitting the cap in no time flat without prior knowledge of the game or resources like money, equipment etc prior to leveling

I think its hard to gauge how easy it is to hit surplus because we haven't seen if partying makes the most sense in higher levels, and if that is a lot faster. If partying turns out to even be 50% faster than soloing, chances are that we're going to hit surplus earlier than we'd like.

I wouldn't mind capping surplus, so I can move onto DoH jobs. OB is really difficult to even reach surplus let alone hit the cap right now.

So you're saying that you had a LV50 character in "a matter of weeks" in the beta, then?

I don't understand why you're even trying to make the distinction (other than an obvious attempt to dodge the question). No one gives a f*ck about FFXI beta and no one (besides you) commented on it. I said that the game (the RETAIL game, Einstein) was a grindfest and you starting spouting off some nonsense about how some Japanese players successfully avoided life for a few weeks and hit the cap, oh and BTW You Were In The FFXI Beta So Your Opinion Should Be Respected. Quite subtle there, Mr. Big Time.

In any case, your argument is fundamentally upside-down. We all recognize that in any given pool of MMO players, there are hardcore players who will play the game nonstop. According to you, even these hardcore, no-life players took multiple weeks to reach LV50 in FFXI retail. This is not a point in your favor.

Yeah, 20 hour sessions aren't really grinding as long as you don't know what you're doing!

I see the problem here: you appear to be talking about some other form of grinding that has nothing to do with extended marathon gaming sessions full of tedious, repetitive gameplay.

If we pretend that your 'certain distance' is arbitrary and pointless, that analogy makes sense.

You know, just for the sake of looking more appealing, I wish they would increase the levelling curve, but at the same time, rather than a 100%-0% decay, create a 200%-100-75% decay.

I'd imagine there'd be a lot less crying over that for the simple fact it looks less like a punishment.

That's what's sad about this whole thing. Not many can wrap their had around the fact that they would simply be impeded in other ways if not this way. They are just used to the other ways.

What's the difference? Taking 2 months to grind to 50 because of barriers put up in the leveling process, or taking 2 months to grind to 50 because of a steep exp-curve?
