Modding a XBOX360
I have a xbox360 that I basically never use, it's been sitting in the box most of the time and have recently decided it would be fun to mod it, since I've done so with the psp in the past. My xbox360 is newer, was purchased around a year ago (Black Friday to be exact), and it is a Jasper with the 512 MB on board storage. (it was an Arcade). Is this version modable? I am sure you can flash a new firmware on the dvd drive, but I have read you can't flash custom dashboards and such on it. Anyone experienced with this?
Before anyone says "don't do it you will get banned from live", I have never payed for xbox live, and never plan to so this is not an issue for me. This post will be edited in a few minutes once I figure out what dashboard is on this thing.

I modded my roommates 360 using a couple guides I found online. It took me 5-6 hours to get everything figured out and flashed correctly. Once you get the hang of the process, it goes pretty quickly.
One annoying part about it was always having to flash the drive back to the original so I could burn a game from Gamefly. Then flash it back to the mod. For a 1 DVD game, it would take me about 45 min to burn.
Let me google and see if I can find the guide I used.
Edit: Everything I needed was here. http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/foru...ack-tutorials/
Note: After 6 months the console RROD. Roommate was pissed.

I think you can only flash the dvd drive to play copies of games, as far as I'm aware you can only get homebrew on JTAG Xbox's.
And I think one of the requirements for JTAG is you need a much older dashboard (pre-NXE I think?) to be able to do this, so I'm out of luck.

That is what I was reading Shjoin. I guess I will just flash the dvd drive and hopefully they will find another exploit in the future.
Edit-
Looks like I have a LiteOn drive, its the big U with nothing else when the drive ejects, and the cables are yellow.
This link says it should be light on, so I'll be trying to figure out how to flash that.

If anyone has a guide to flashing this particular drive (I know some have certain sata card requirements to flash these) please post it.
Console is Manufactured 8-6-09, some one said they (themselves) were unable to flash consoles manuf in August+, any help would be appreciated.

You don't need pre-NXE for Jtagging, just pre a specific build number(it occured after NXE), if you really haven't updated it in a year+ then it should be jtaggable. Look at your dashboard build number in the menus.

Go google jungleflasher. They got a hardcore pdf file that goes thru flowcharts and full instructions.
What drive is yours again? The one on the far right?

Long story, what I did was open the drive, pressed the close button but put my finger in the tray.
Waited till it stopped, unplugged the power, then plugged it back in.
Light should be blinking. Afterwards, you can slap a custom firmware on the dvd drive. After that, you're done
Honestly, the longest part was taking apart my 360 XD

I have yellow wires, so according to this I have the Lite-on. I think my firmwares been updated, my brother played some games on it which I'm sure installed patches. The real issue i'm seeing is a bunch of people warning that you need to find some code from your console before you flash a new firmware on the drive, and failing to get the correct one, for any reason, will basically screw you from using that drive, and making you buy a new dvd drive by liteon?
-
If your Xbox is Jtaggable don't even bother with flashing the DVD drive, it's much more annoying, need to get your dashboard version number so you can confirm if it is or isn't.

2.0.8955
I think it needs to be 73~~ something to be jtagable. Like I said I'm sure my brother patched it when he played some of his xbox games.
It is possible to use the hack up to Version 7371, but starting with Dashboard-Version 8xxx it isn't possible anymore.
With Jasper, beginning MFR July 2009, you have to read out the NAND first anyway to know for sure that the Hack will work. (The NAND should be read out anyway, doesn't matter which Mainboard-Revision you have).
so SOL, since I'm sure you can't roll back firmwares like u can on the psp
-
You can, but it's a much more complex physical mod.
Yeah, SOL =/ sucks.
-
Woot, ended up being a Liteon, manuf was July 9 2009, and was a v1 not a v2. Mission successful, after finding out jungleflasher would tell you if it was a v2, I just got lucky. (about as close as you can, many consoles aug+ are v2... guess I snuck by)

IMO, get someone on craigslist near you to do it for ~50 bucks. Experienced modders can do the job in 10-20 mins. Half of that is just opening the case.
For sept 09 models you're gonna need a custom spear or a PC with an old serial port and a serial adapter.. sata pci card to read and write the firmware.. a headache just to do 1 system.
I've been modding Xboxes since 07, it's not hard if you can read, just need to invest in some basic hardware that's not worth it for just one system.
And yeah, as far as JTag/Full console unlock you're outta luck.
