Who says the sewer has to be straight routes? Charlie said he knew his way around so maybe going the initial wrong direction loops around and brings them the right way. Are you really questioning charlies sewer knowledge? I bet you would be an idiot inside the sewers and not even take your clothes off.

Generally for the first 5/10 year ones at least.

Only a small number of people really change from high school to early adulthood. Even above this, some people never really change and act the same as they did.
