You definitely do need to progress through SP to unlock later phases. I can confirm that without a doubt.
When I was on P3 I had all missions done and then finished Ch3 and suddenly the missions opened up.

This was when I selected "Single Player" at the stone so it wasn't someone else's progress holding me up.

Then I have some work to do! I started doing some P1 missions today, but maybe I'll try and finish story mode first so that I can (hopefully) plow through the single player Phase missions. I'm really enjoying the game, and I can only imagine it would be a lot more fun multiplayer.

I like to alternate between the two; multiplayer is nice after grinding chapters.

Does anyone know the requirement to advance chapters? I'm on Ch. 6 and trying to get to 7 asap for a weapon material. I always assumed the red missions were like "Urgent" missions in MH and had to be completed. Otherwise, are there just a certain number of other missions that have to be completed? Does it matter which ones?

Beating the ones in red usually unlocks the next few missions or next chapter if there are none in red I choose to do the one with either a new monster or the toughest one/two and that unlocks the next ones.

You have a phone too. Just link it with that if you need online play.

Only have the 3g one due to it being on sale in a bundle for cheaper then the WiFi only.

Anyone use bow often on Toukiden? I switched to it for variety but I'm at a loss on how best to balance each of the attacks and SPT spells for the best DPS.

Mainly wanted to switch so I have a forge weapon to work toward; the Plover Blades are only slightly worse than the forge blades.

So far Fountain seems pretty OP but hard to tell if it's me or the people I'm playing with

Going to be a fairly lengthy post, sorry;

Two techniques that bow rely on to really shine are Mad Rush/Charge shot and "Piercing".

Mad Rush/Charge shot is the most important; it allows you to trick the game into thinking you're running as you shoot forcing a precision strike with Charge. Works as follows;

Hold R to run
Cancel movement via holding square and stay in place
Hold R, let go of square and aim with right stick
Let go of R to shoot.

You can free aim the shots if you wish or just lock onto parts and release square, but if the character takes a step between you pressing square and shooting "Charge" wont proc.

You can test if you're doing this right with skills such as Heroes' Rally or Fervor as they will decrease your ability cooldowns or refill your focus bar if you perform a precision strike

Piercing is when you charge up the square attack to level 3; it gains the ability to hit multiple hitboxes so long as they are in the path of your arrow.

As for builds;

Elemental Bow Damage:

Saito Hajime (SPD)
- Knowledge lv.3
- Expert Destroyer
- SPD Master Reduce

Lady Shizuka (SPT)
- Knowledge lv.2
- Knowledge lv.3
- Knowledge lv.4

Lady Kasuga (SPT)
- Knowledge lv.2
- Knowledge lv.4
- Expert Destroyer

This one focuses on boosting the elemental damage of a bow and filling the weapon gauge rapidly. Main method of attack should be Cursed Arrows > Homing Arrows; landing 4-5 cursed seals on a target then detonating them all with the orange/red homing arrows.

If you're locking onto a target and the symbols are yellow you're too far away, whilst these will detonate the cursed seals they dont do as much damage and wont fill the weapon gauge anywhere near as much as the orange/red lock on symbols do. You'll know when you're doing this right because the weapon gauge should fill by 20-35% with each volley.

Whilst it is entertaining firing off slayer moves at such frequency this build has its weaknesses. Firstly against mobs that are highly mobile (Wind/Skyshredders) this build just isn't fun, you spend most of the fight chasing after those sort of mobs which results is slow kill times. Secondly, when you're up against multiple mobs that have opposing elemental weaknesses and affinities all that extra elemental damage doesn't do anything, again resulting in slower kill speeds.

Abe no Seimei (SPT)
- Pursuit+ (Bolster)
- Pursuit+ (Devour)
- SPT Master (Renewal)

Goto Matabei (DEF)
- Charge
- Devotion
- Heroes' Rally

Kamiizumi Nobutsuna (SPC)
- Fountain+ (Bolster)
- Pursuit+ (Bolster)
- SPT Master (Devote)

*Goto Matabei will result in faster kill times but is from one of the later phase missions; Oishi Kurannosuke is a suitable replacement.

Oishi Kurannosuke (SPD)
- Charge
- Devistation
- Heroes' Rally

Probably the highest DPS and my favoured build, but it requires you to trigger "Charge" on each shot.

Bolster+ (Devour) will give you a level 5 SPT charge for your next ability whenever you hit a mob with pursuit and Heroes' Rally will shorten the cooldown on abilities whenever you deal a precision strike (providing you're procing "Charge", that is always) allowing you to use your abilities at full charges in rapid succession. On top of that SPT Master (Renewal) allows you to keep the charge level you gain during your stance of communion until you use an ability.

The ability cycle I personally use is; Full SPT Charge > Square shot to acquire lock on > Pursuit > "Charge" level 3 square shot > Fountain > Wait for fountain to be cooling > "Charge" level 3 square shot x2 > repeat, with Eruption tossed in there to break the smaller/annoying parts.

With this build I have been able to take down all the chapter and phase large oni mobs in under 7 minutes with 3 NPCs, I'm sure better players can do it in under 6.

Minamoto no Yorimasa (ATK)
- Devastation

- Might+ (Rage)

Sakamoto Otomoe (ATK)
- Charge
- Fervor
- Devotion

Saigo Takamori (ATK)
- Devotion
- Devastation
- Attack Up lv.3

Another "Charge" build focused on boosting raw precision strike damage. Fervor should regain the focus spent on the level 3 square shot so the only reason to stop shooting is if you have to dodge or use an ability.

This build isn't as good as the SPT based one and REQUIREs piercing to really be worth using, but if you really wanted to go with attack mitama over spirit and not worry about elemental resistances it is an option.

As for the triangle shots, for the most part they are terrible, triangle x3/fountain looking shot can be decent with Carnage up, but that really is it.
