I just hope it means devs won't try to dumb down/restrict themselves from designing a PS3 game that fully exploits the hardware because they want to have that kind of "take your save on the go" functionality in the PSP2 port of it.

Anyways, a feature I'd love in NGP is a built-in Adhoc Party. Granted I'd expect such a service to require Sony to either charge for it, or make it part of a subscription package to pay for the servers they use for users to connect/create lobbies in.

I also hope they have plans regarding those analog sticks sticking out. They won't be pocket friendly at the least if there's not a means of having them recede into the case.

Didn't consider that Kaisha. Maybe the plan on shipping with a snap on cover or something like that. I still can't quite tell how far the pop out from the face.

Seems the sticks are really narrow a the base too, which worries me.

Oh wow, those are a lot more protruded than I thought they were. Cover (that is symetrical in shape overall with the back?) makes a lot more sense now.

    Will that work with android?

My tether/hotspot app for my iPhone doesn't currently support any type of handheld like the psp or the DS

i reckon the emulation scene will flourish on this just as much as on psp. there's no real way to combat homebrew and fuck anyone that says otherwise. i'll be looking forward to full speed n64 emulation, saturn, dreamcast, ps2, etc. may be wishful thinking on my part to have this be an emulator powerhouse

If the PS3 can't software emulate PS2 games, this sure as hell can't.

Uh, the PS3 can software emulate the PS2. They just don't make the ones that do anymore.

I mean, fuck, my piece of shit computer could run PCSX2 back in like 2005 or whatever. The PSP2 has a quad-core CPU. I think it can handle it.

No it can't. While they called it software emulation, it only emulated the Emotion Engine. It still contained the Graphics Synthesizer because PS3 hardware couldn't emulate its speeds. As far as I know with homebrew having been available now on PS3 for a while, there is still no PS2 emulator, and if they do get one running I'm not sure how stable it would be. And if the PS3 can't do it, I wouldn't bank on this being able to do it unless there is something with the hardware or architecture that allows it to be done. I know PCSX2 is pretty CPU hungry, so maybe they just can't get it working with the CELL, I don't know.

Hell, PS2 emulation still isn't great on the PC. It works to an extent, sure... but even now there's a lot of games that don't run properly or at all.
Try playing Tales of Legendia on PCSX2 and no matter whether you get it to run (in software mode) you'll never get it to run the way you want it. Trying it in hardware mode will basically lock up your whole PC too.

There's quite a number of games out there that do similar things. I'm sure that NGP wouldn't be able to do it well at this point in time, but that's not to say that it never will.

Rumor: Ubisoft survey outs NGP pricing
Yesterday, research firm Toluna conducted a survey in partnership with Ubisoft titled “Ubisoft – NGP concept – US Adults”. The survey makes direct reference to the price of the console, saying that “the retail price of the [3G] Sony NGP is expected to be around $350,” and that the version without 3G should go for around $250.

The numbers sound around what many of us where expecting, although I would’ve thought the 3G version would only be $50 or so greater than the standard platform. We can only wait on an official pricing announcement from Sony.

That's a hefty price ticket for 3g, even before you pay for a 2 year contract.

Would be a swift kick to Nintendo's balls if the non-3G really was $250. I can't see it just having 3G making for a theoretical $100 price jump. I would hope their line of thinking was general free access to PSN friendslist and small stuff on-the-go without the need for a proper data plan.

That's wishful thinking. I do expect at least a $100 difference between 3ds and the "affordable" PSP2. Only way I see Sony pricing somewhere around $250 is if they wait for a 2012 release.

If I'm negative nancy... prices won't be high?! :troll:

NGP games will be downloadable day-and-date with retail releases
SCEA hasn't managed to deliver all PSP UMD releases digitally -- let alone simultaneously with retail -- and even said the likelihood of making such parity would be several years off. That doesn't appear to be the case with PSP's sucessor, the NGP, based on comments made by SCEE president Andrew House.

"One thing we learnt from PSP, is that we want to have simultaneous delivery in digital and physical for NGP," House told MCV. "Just to clarify that, all games that appear physically will be made available digitally."

While that's certainly positive news, we're still waiting on word about Sony filling in the gaps on downloadable PSP back-catalog games -- which will run on the NGP, some with patched-in support for the handheld's second analog stick. Then there's the matter of the system's proprietary flash storage media, needed to store downloaded games, being a bit fuzzy. In short: Sony still has a lot to explain about its powerful new portable.

Proprietary storage device makes me :/ the largest psp game I have is dissidia at 1gbish.8gb san disk are what, 29.99 now? So I'd expect Sony's to be 40 to cover 6ish games? I'm still excited, just hope it won't cost too much.

What if that model comes with 1gb/mo (or 2gb) capped service for free for 2 years? It is not unheard of, for instance look at chrome os, and the nook.

If it comes with a 2gb cap (or even 1gb) of free service for 2 years I could see me using it. If after the first 2 years they have a $20/mo or less plan for a 2gb-5gb cap I could also see me purchasing it.

Are you really surprised? Sony makes most of their money off doing crap like this then making other companies pay to use their formats. See Bluray, MS Duo, as well as a bunch of other ms formats. It is annoying but I always just see it as a one time investment.

Honestly, the first thing that popped in my mind when they said proprietary memory format was "Oh boy, Memory Sticks, round two. Here we gooooo again!".

Tretton: Japan earthquake may push NGP out of 2011 in some regions
As a result of the recent earthquake in Japan, the NGP handheld may not make the holiday 2011 release window worldwide. "It may be the straw that says 'maybe we get to just one market by the end of the year,'" SCEA president Jack Tretton told Bloomberg, suggesting that Sony may opt to stagger production of the handheld and release it in just one territory this year. According to Bloomberg, damage from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami has slowed Sony's production line by forcing the closure of "several" factories in northern Japan. Sony's plan as of January was already to have the handheld out in "at least one territory" by holiday 2011. It's just more likely to be just one now.

Of course, we hope we can all agree that the people of Japan have more important things to worry about right now than rushing out video game hardware. On the upside, Tretton brought up the point that increased time before release will allow developers to put more work into their launch games.
Ehhhh. Better to release it when it's ready.
