For some reason, I'm skeptical about a Spike Chunsoft game that tries to focus on actual real-time gameplay but I'll watch this one.
From that first look, seems interesting enough.

Am I to understand that the PS3 and VITA versions will have different protags though?

So Chari since you're the Tales expert, will Tales of Hearts R be worth it?

In all honesty I'm probably getting it either way for some portable Tales action at work, but just wondering what your opinion on that one was.

I actually have not played even a second of Hearts R!
I played ToH on DS but its got an entirely different battle system to Hearts R.

Middle of the road on story/characters in the original if you ask me but that's too subjective. Everything I've seen about R makes it seem decent enough though.

Played DS version in moonrunes also. Looks basically to me it's an "if you like Tales games, buy it" game. Nothing super special, but nothing bad either. Story is still weird and kind of unpolished though from what I'm hearing. Who cares, it's a Tales game--let's hit and juggle things for crazy combos.

It doesn't have a few of the DS features though, like Cameo Attacks. But it more than makes up for that by not having the generic looking paths from place to place that are boring and worthless.

It's worth the buy if you're not in a situation where you need to 'pick what to play', especially seeing that the next jRPG doesn't hit until the end of the month (Persona Q), and Atlus games don't exactly cater to the same crowd as Tales usually to begin with.

Biggest offender for me (and this is huge 'cause its a battle theme you will hear a lot aside from the fact that it was my favorite random battle theme)

Eh, I'm sure I'll have ones that piss me off too. The one you posted is a pretty good example of what to expect from arrangements in this game. But that's probably not going to be one of them that I add to the "wow this is really bad" list.

I like the simplicity of the DS one, and while I like the arrangement also, there's something in it that just sounds... I don't know, it just sounds cheap to me. Like, oh, we'll arrange these tracks because lolDS music on a Vita right, but let's not actually put a decent budget into it and get it done 100% right.

Aside from the electric guitar beefing up the mid range, and the drums not sounding like crap on the Vita version, there's not a whole lot difference between the two versions. Could just be a bad quality recording for the video but the snare sounds like someone throwing a plastic cup down some stairs in the DS version. The "lead" sounds kinda 80's cheesy and theremin-esque in the Vita version but otherwise I wouldn't say it's a bad arrangement by any means. It kinda reminds me of some PS Mega Man X games.

Could just be nostalgia making you hate the arrangment. Or more likely just a difference in tastes.

Just sounds like the DS version but with MIDI-tier samples thrown in, along with a guitar as mentioned. Should be 'fine' with the typical mishmash of battle sounds thrown on top though.

I've been contemplating picking up Hearts R, but I got Abyss sitting on my 3ds unfinished still. I wasn't big on its battle theme either.

Gonna say its probably the guitar considering I like the RM3 arrangement, so I don't really think its nostalgia.

Electronics Technician in the Coast Guard, but I spend lots of time on the road and don't usually drive. And work slows way the fuck down in the winter and we just sit around the shop all day doing nothing.

Supervisor is a civilian and as long as all the work gets done (which it does) he's not too particular about what we do sitting around the shop.

Yeah, to me the R arrangement is better than that version. Could just be awful guitar samples in that version since I play guitar and I'm more prone to notice these things. But I mean, none of the versions sounds "bad" so it's just preference.
