So apparently this is legit. Someone saw the source code of the sony/playstation website and there some /PSVita/Games web addresses that aren't active yet. Not sure how I feel about the new name, but I think they're playing the same game xbox played with Sony... They dont want "PSP2" up against "3DS".

I'll change the name when it's official or has the usual 'leaked info' goes out.

    NGP's backwards compatibility unveiled
Sony's NGP will offer full backwards compatibility with the PlayStation Network's library of PSP games, and will offer an optimized experience for each one.

PSP games played with the NGP will be smoothed and upscaled, and the NGP's dual analogue sticks will also be supported.

Sony Bend's Resistance Retribution has been demonstrated working on the NGP, with the second analogue stick now being used to move the character's view in the third person shooter.

PSP games are run via a software emulator within the NGP, and the upscaling can be toggled on and off by the player.

The PSP backwards compatibility seems to mirror the efforts of the PSP Remaster Series, which allow optimized versions of PSP games to run on the PS3.

I'd assume that means psx titles will also be supported but I have yet to see any confirmation on that directly. I've bought lots of those on PSN which would be awesome to have available on the NGP when I get one.

No ones posted the screenshots that got released yet? Apparently all from the games frame buffer.

EDIT: Oh they're in the information thread. Keep forgetting that thing is up there.

Sony's Yoshida On How NGP Will Avoid PSP's Biggest Mistake
Sony Computer Entertainment's head of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida says the upcoming code-named Next Generation Portable will provide a totally unique mobile gaming experience, unlike the company's first portable.

"Our biggest mistake, I would say, with PSP was we were just so happy to provide the PS2 gaming on the go, and we kind of stopped there," Yoshida said in an interview with Gamespot.

"What we wanted to do with NGP was, besides the great graphics and CPU, think on what interface we could put in to make the gameplay really stand out. You know, something that you cannot even do with the PS3," he said.

The NGP's front and rear touch pads, dual analog sticks and camera-based augmented reality will all be key to creating portable experiences that "you cannot replicate in the console experience," Yoshida said.

Elsewhere in the interview, Yoshida detailed how the NGP will use edge smoothing and filtering techniques to enhance the graphics of the downloadable PSP games which will be playable on the system, and offer options to remap PSP camera controls to the NGP's second analog stick.

Yoshida also emphasized the importance of the NGP's running smartphone-style content through support for the upcoming PlayStation Suite (PSS), which will also run on Android phones and tablets.

"NGP is certainly one of the key devices that we will like to support PSS, so that, as NGP owners, you’ll be able to choose to play some more casual, cell phone-type content on top of the console-style NGP games," Yoshida said. "Also, from the content providers, they can have a larger installed base of devices that they can target when they create games on the PSS format."

Yoshida confirmed in the interview that the NGP would not have an external video connection to allow for play on TVs or monitors, but refused to give details on planned 3G data connections or hardware pricing.

I could have swore awhile back that I read it'd be capable of doing 720p-out?

Still kinda hoping for some form of a UMD-drive optional peripheral so I can play my PSP games on it. It's design would at least allow for one to clip onto its rear comfortably, unlike the PSP Go with it's slide-out display making it near impossible to mount one safely.

I haven't read the article but maybe there's a chance it's making a distinction between external video alone as opposed to functionality relating to the PS3 as a go-between?

hate to say it, but i'd say theres practically a 0% chance of them having a umd add-on to allow those to be backwards compatible.

    I know, it's just wishful thinking. ;_:

Odds are the battery will be stressed enough as-is, adding something like an external UMD drive would probably push it beyond 3DS-bad.

Lack of tv-out really bugs me though. It sucked horribly on 2000/3000 PSP models without CFW plugins, and I was kinda hoping for something that worked as you expected this time around. Perhaps in a version revision maybe.

Gotta have something to add in PSP Vita 2000 model, think of it like the "iphone/ipod idea" Don't do everything u should/can do all at the same time. Do them 1 at a time so you can make people keep purchasing virtually the same thing over and over again.

I don't know about ya'll, but I'm pretty fucking hyped for this beast of a handheld. I can imagine consoles becoming redundant someday with the way technology is evolving, and I say good riddance. The JP's already seem to have started favoring handhelds this gen. Maybe with PSV and transfarrable games will make them and the devs switch completely when they can develop for both platforms simultaneously for little extra cost.

Final Fantasy type-1 with crystal tools on this thing, transfarrable to PS3... dissidia, KH, monster hunter, METAL GEAR...

Shut up Sony and take my money.

Here's a rumor which I hope is not BS:

Rumor goes the new Guerrilla Games IP will be the big NGP-PS3 unveil at E3.

you know, its possible it doesnt have tv out because there will be some kind of functionality with the ps3 where it can wirelessly stream over the tv via syncing.

Here is a list of your PlayStation Vita developers
Eager to toot its horn on the vast third-party support the PlayStation Vita will apparently enjoy, Sony fired off a list of developers in a press email earlier today. The Japanese developers currently dwarf the North American studios who have signed up, but it's understandable: Sony has been doing well in Japan with the PSP for some time now, there's more confidence in the platform there.
