The idea is that you won't download big binary files over 3G and use the wireless instead.

I'll clarify. Individual carriers are limiting the size of the app downloads you can do over 3G. That limit is 20MB. This doesn't affect normal data downloads from anywhere else, including youtube, etc. The same will apply to the Vita. If you want to buy large apps and download them with the Vita, you will have to do it over wifi.
most likely not as most cell phone carriers have that same cap
If I had an android tab I'd tether my phone to it and attempt to download plants vs zombies on it. As I don't perhaps someone else can. That will quickly tell... because as far as the tablet is concerned you are using wifi, which is what store checks for before proceeding with the download. Just because the wifi happens to be a 3g connection doesn't mean anything. I've downloaded larger files from places like rapidshare so it's not a global block over 20MB. I assume the stores just have a wifi check to prevent larger files from being downloaded, and if this is the case then tethering WILL get around that.
no, its your phone that will block it, not the tablet
According to wikipedia (which cites other sources) -
"The device is fully backwards-compatible with all PlayStation Portable games digitally released on the PlayStation Network via the PlayStation Store, with the Vita's dual analog sticks being supported on selected PSP games."
So I assume PSP games that can downloaded on the PSP Go (which was download only right?) can be played on the Vita?
How does it achieve this backward compatibility? Software (emulation) or hardware (similar to first gen PS3's backward compatibility with PS2 games through hardware?)
With the power in that little machine, I wouldn't be surprised if it was software emulation, with it being damn well near perfect with it.
yeah, id lean towards software emulation as well. shouldnt be too terribly hard for them to do right. a lot of games are supposedly going to support remapping controls to the 2nd analog stick too
I was thinking it'd be more along the lines of being like WINE where it just translates any instructions needed for the PSP to the PSV equivalent. A straight up software emulation, to me, sounds like it'd just eat the battery.
I could still go for an external UMD add-on though, even if it'd happen the battery life further.
yeah, i think they're completely just gonna kill umd though, isnt really enough usefulness left in it for them to waste the money developing that

PlayStation Vita Backwards Compatibility Plan: Re-Buy UMD Games At A Discount
Only UMD games I have left are: KH: Birth by Sleep, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Keeper, and Valkyrie Profile. And I don't think BBS is on PSN is it? Wouldn't mind playing through it again just for the 2nd analog stick.PlayStation Vita is backwards compatible with PSP games, but only downloadable versions. So, what happens to that stack of UMDs you own? Sony Computer Entertainment Japan is working on a plan to migrate PSP owners to PlayStation Vita.
According to an interview with Dengeki PlayStation, SCEJ is considering a special offer where UMD owners can buy a downloadable version of the same title at a special price. No details were offered on how much each game will cost or if a similar program is under review for North America.
PlayStation Vita makes its debut in Japan on December 17.
Be nice if they were only 99 cents. Fuck anything higher than that.
but as with all battered wives, the fans will be happy if they just fucking followed through with such promises for once.
BBS was due to Disney being anti-digital with their goods. As for Crysis Core, no clue on that one.
I can't really think of any PSP games I'd want to pay for the privelage of playing on my PSV though. Majority of the games I own I already beaten and typically have no desire to play again, or just play in my room since they're too involved for pickup-and-play on the go. I'd say Lumines, but PSV already has a new one announced for it. Maybe Gradius Collection?
If the vita can play psp downloaded games, why don't they just make a device like old usb floppy drives to read the umd and plug in a usb-like connection?
they want to move away from umd completely. thats wasted money making a device that does that when they're dropping umds from the market in its entirety
