It's also probably a lot cheaper on both sides for them to just give you a (hopefully) small charge for a digital copy of select UMDs you own than it is to buy a UMD-drive adapter

Shame that the odds of such a system happening outside of Japan are next to none.

You probably need to brush up on your history of Sony's paranoia wrt their own hardware potentially used to circumvent copy protection. Sony tends to remove functionality rather than add it.

PlayStation Vita Doesn’t Play Nice With PsOne Classics

PlayStation Vita is backwards compatible with downloadable PSP games. So, you can play Akiba’s Trip and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on it. Final Fantasy VII from the PsOne Classics section… eh maybe not.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan posted a PlayStation Vita FAQ and there is a big asterisk next to the part where it says the handheld is compatible with PSP software downloaded from the PlayStation Store.

It says support for Game Archives (aka PsOne Classics and TurboGrafx-16 games in Japan) are the exception. In other words, PlayStation Vita won’t be able to run Metal Gear Solid or Chrono Cross. Sony says they will release more information about this soon.

PS Vita 3G download cap confirmed for North America

A Sony Computer Entertainment America engineer has confirmed the 20MB download cap on 3G versions of the PlayStation Vita. Already confirmed in Japan, it would seem North America Vitas will be subject to similar restrictions imposed by the 3G carrier -- in this case, AT&T.

Sony's Chris Norden did state that larger downloads could still be obtained via wi-fi, but this more or less eliminates the point of the 3G-enabled SKU. I already struggled to see a reason for the 3G variant's existence, but this definitely seals the deal.

Since the cheaper and already more preferable wi-fi SKU exists, this isn't so bad. Still, I don't know how Sony can even begin to justify the 3G alternative. Seems like a total waste of time and money.

As others said, now its only use is online play, but 3g raises latency issues. Oh well, saves me 50 bucks.

you cant play most games online over 3g, they require wifi

you wanna play something like hot shots or pool over 3g? fine

wanna play CoD? lmao no

the 3g is for communications mostly, sending/receiving messages, turn by turn games/etc. and the location based features of the system so you can have them on at all times

Given the PSX examples they give, I'm taking it that means the multi-disc emulation isn't in yet.

Actually the games were chosen by the site passing the news on. The Sony Japanese site doesn't give any examples. The Sony site basically says:

"Game Archives games (PS1 stuff) are an exception (to what works). More information will be forthcoming regarding these games."

Not gonna go into a fit over it, we'll see what this "more information" is because they aren't coming out now and just saying everything won't work.

Also, Vita reservations opening here tomorrow. Gonna head to my favorite game store after work. Woot.

Edit: Also, others are reporting that Sony already said PSOne classics WOULD play on Vita... so who knows.

If the NGP turns out that it can't play PSX games, then that is pretty much a deal breaker for me, and I'll just wait for a price drop to $200~ and get the NGP slim or something.

I think my sister got the purple one overseas...(Before we got it in the Hannah Montana bundle. Fyi, best PSP color of all time)

Otherwise, I'm not even sure if I'm willing to own a handheld that isn't white or black anymore lol. (I guess I'd be okay with character armor kits /shrug)

Haven't been keeping up with every detail of the Vita, is it region locked? If it is, that's dumb. Should be able to import it and just switch the language to English and bam it works with everything.
