No Game Archive or Flash Support on PlayStation Vita at Launch
A FAQ at the PlayStation Vita official site suggested that something was up with Game Archive support on Sony's new portable. Now we have full confirmation courtesy of Famitsu. In a FAQ that appears in this week's issue, the magazine confirms that Game Archive games will not be playable on the Vita at launch.

Depending on usage, "Game Archives" can include either PlayStation titles or both PlayStation titles and PC Engine/TurboGrafx titles. The Famitsu FAQ only says that "Archive" titles cannot be played, so it's presumable that the limitation applies to both types.

The FAQ response also says "at time of launch," suggesting that the support will be added later.

Famitsu's FAQ has a number of other bits about the system, including:

Sony is looking into a method of allowing PSP owners to carry their save data over to the Vita.

Sony will offer a "Portable Charger," a battery which offers double the capacity of the system's built in battery.

The system's web browser supports Java, HTML5, cookies, and so-forth. It does not support Flash. However, this is just initial functionality.
As the Vita does not use Memory Stick or SD Card, if you want to transfer your music and images from PSP to Vita you'll need to go through PC or PS3.

The system's brightness level setting is not step-based -- you can make gradual adjustments.
You can put the system into sleep mode by quickly pressing the power button. Outside of sleep mode, you can temporarily suspend the current game by pressing the PS Button, which takes you to the game's Live Arena.

You can then use such functionality as PS Store, friend lists, photos and so forth. If you want to boot up another game or the video player, though, you'll need to exit the current game.

Famitsu's FAQ consists of fifty questions, so there may be additional bits of Vita knowledge in there.

Check back later in the day!

More From Famitsu's PlayStation Vita FAQ
A few additional bits from Famitsu's PlayStation Vita FAQ have surfaced. The magazine posted responses to 50 questions buyers might have about the system. Most of the topics were previously announced by Sony, but there were a few new items.

Here are some additional responses to go along with our earlier report.

    Required Peripherals

Famitsu says that a Memory Card is pretty much a requirement, as some games will require the card. Games that require a card can't even be booted up if you don't have one.

    External Video Out

The system does not have external video out.

    PS3 Connectivity

Memory Card data management and Trophy sharing. You can also view video and music via Remote Play. PS3's Torne DVR device can also be used once you've updated its firmware.

    PSP Software Compatibility

You can up the visual quality through bilinear filtering. This can be toggled on and off.

Use of PSP and PS3 Peripherals

The system cannot use PSP and PS3 peripherals

    Internal Software

At shipment time, you can use the following built in apps or functions: Welcome Park (introduces you to the controls), Party (a chatting app that can be used in games), Photo & Camera, Music, Video, Near (a social app for interacting with other Vita systems in your area), Browser, Group Messaging, Friend, Trophy, PS Store, Remote Play, Content Management and Settings.

    Parental Controls

For 3G, content will be filtered by default. If you want this feature turned off, you have to fill out some paperwork at the NTT DoCoMo shop.

    GPS Without a 3G Contract

You can still use GPS, but 3G can acquire positional information faster.

    Current 3G Usage

You can check your current 3G usage through an app called "Network Operator."

    Wi-Fi VS 3G

The system will first attempt to connect via Wi-Fi. If no Wi-Fi connection is found it will connect through 3G. While connected through 3G, even if the system finds a Wi-Fi hotspot, it will not automatically switch.

Mmm, that's good to know, I've been wondering about it for a while.

Ugh. So much for a $250 console.

Sony is looking into a method of allowing PSP owners to carry their save data over to the Vita.
I assume this is for certain protected saves? Apparently some game saves (even though PSP has no trophy) are locked semi-protected or protected and locked on to that PSP (can't be used on other PSP).

PS3 games also have protected saves.

I dislike this because so what if people *cheat? It ruins people backing up their saves in case of hardware failure or some other such.

*Most people probably wouldn't bother cheating anyway (achievements are extra stuff to do for fun and less used for bragging) and even if some people do cheat, that's no big deal since trophies don't really mean much. In SC2 for example, you can cheat and use someone's save to get every single player achievement (on Brutal) for example but most don't really care and people who get them the legit way don't mind either usually.

There is PS Network Plus fortunately which allows save transferring but that shouldn't be the only way to backup saves (plus they need to increase it from 150MB to something a bit higher in the future).

I can only see online-based games locking your PSP save to your PSN handle. Otherwise I've yet to have a problem just copying saves around to my PC.

You can also pass&play non-copyprotected PS3 saves, but it may disable gaining trophies when you use it.

I think what Sony is referring to is possibly getting it on the Vita without the means of using a PC to act as the hub for the memory cards. That would require either an adapter for Vita, or, what I assume they'll probably do, allow copying files from one PSP/PSV to another via adhoc.

It means that your UMD-carrying PSP case won't fit the Vita, no memcard compatability, etc.

They have to make their money back somehow....., the pics I've seen show them to be a little larger (physically) than a standard SD card also which is wtf.

They will R.A.P.E. you at Customs, so if you have a canadian friend who's coming down in the spring you'll do better.

At the very least, I know that shipping from the US to Canada is fucking expensive as shit. Don't know really of the opposite direction. THANKS NAFTA.

Will you be able to use the rear touchpad as extra shoulder buttons somehow?

If not, I think they should have done it like the Classic Controller on the Wii (it has 4 shoulder buttons, 4 buttons on the same line but still easy to use) if at least to make it have the same amount of buttons as regular controllers.

I wonder if this means Canada won't be getting 3G Vita at all given our sparse access to it if you live outside any of the major cities.

Yes. Some devs are also using the sides of the display as a means of putting unimportant functions there that from what I've read, are easily reached with your thumbs.

I can't recall if the joysticks are clickable though.

I'd upgrade my canadian preorder if I knew what the hell Little Deviants is... that game wasn't on my radar at all.

Also, anyone here ever buy PSP games from PSN? How big are they roughly? I'll be getting FF type-0 over PSN to play on vita, but I want to know if a 4gb vita card will cut it.

Varies wildly from game to game. The 'big' exclusives tend to take a full UMD (1.6gb), and Type-0 has 2 UMDs, so.......probably want a 4gb stick just for it handy.

Little Deviants is that puzzle-platformin' sorta game that uses backtouch to 'raise' the land around your dude.

Seems like a safe bet that 4 gb will be enough for it, but hard to say how much it'll actually use. If you plan to put any other games on it, you'll probably want to invest in a bigger memory card.
