I hope you meant 45MB :D
I hope you meant 45MB :D
What?
I feel like I interjected myself in a conversation without realizing I didn't know the beginning. When people talk about these large file types, is it because the PSP/Vita will required a game download to the storage like the PS3 or something similar that just requires a lot of space, or are these size issues only when it comes to pirating games? If it's the latter, then it really doesn't bother me, but if legitimately acquired games are going to take almost an entire 4GB card, that's beyond obscene.
There will be two main uses for the memory cards:
1) general data, including saves, music, and other misc things. This is entirely insignificant, and 4 gb is far more than enough (save files should never be more than 5 mb or so).
2) downloaded games. Not just piracy, but also from psn. All games will be available to download from psn, which would be saved to a memory card. This also includes dlc, demos, psp games, etc. As i mentioned above, the files sizes here vary wildly, and could be anywhere from 100 mb for a small game, to 4 gb+.
If you are going to buy a physical copy of all your games, then 4 gb should be sufficient for you. Even with dlc, and such, you should have enough space, if only to last until there is a micro sd adapter available.
Dude what
To date, the games that can save data onto the Vita game card include Asphalt: Injection, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, F1 2011, Dynasty Warriors Musou Next, Shin Kamaitachi no Yoru, Dark Quest, Shinobodo 2, Power Smash 3, BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend, The Michael Jackson Experience, Mah-Jong Fight Club, Let's Try Bass Fishing: Fish On Next, and Lord of Apocalypse.
The games that require a memory card for saves include @field, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Dream Club Zero, Disgaea 3, Hot Shots Golf 6, Monster Raider, and Ridge Racer.

PS Vita games will not have fixed prices
Sony has declared that PlayStation Vita games shall do away with a fixed pricing model, instead using a range of different prices to help combat the rise of cheap smartphone games. That's Sony doing something adaptive and smart. I'm genuinely impressed.
"I think it would be safe to assume we will take a more tailored approach than perhaps we've done in the past," said SCEE CEO Jim Ryan. "It's our challenge to ensure that the gaming experience that we provide is closer to that TV console experience than it is to your 69p thing that you've downloaded on your iPhone. If we do that and we provide great value to the consumer on games like Uncharted, I think the possibility to sustain historic console type price points is there."
Ryan's words back up news that Japanese Vita prices will have quite a range to them.
I've wanted us to have a tiered pricing model for a very long time. It just makes sense to only charge a premium rate for the games that are guaranteed to sell for a premium rate, like the aforementioned Uncharted. Smaller titles and untested IP need a smarter price, and I'm incredibly intrigued to see how far Sony takes this.
Here's hoping that by "tailored prices" they don't mean "between fifty-five and sixty dollars."
They'll have to consider dropping the ERSB requirement on 'PS miniS' also if they want to keep the prices of the cellphone-game-ports low also.
When i was looking into importing, games ranged from $35 to $70+. I wouldn't be surprised if they ranged from 20 or 30 to 50 in the US.
Read that as: 'Sony lowering minimum volume requirements for dev licensees, opening floodgates to shovelware.'
Meanwhile the games you want to play on a dedicated gaming console will still be $40. Probably more now that handheld consoles are being targetted like the PS3/360. Coming Soon: Exclusive Altair Skin to people who pre-order Little Deviants + DLC Season Pass, only at GameStop.
Spoiler: show

PS Vita UMD Passport game list is live, missing key games
While the PlayStation Vita will support PSP games, it does not have a UMD drive. For this reason Sony came up with their UMD Passport program. Through this, you'll be able to register UMD games to get a discounted digital copy for your Vita on the PlayStation Network.
The list of UMD Passport games has gone live on the PlayStation Japan webpage. There's 262 games on the list as of now, which means a good bit of the PSP library is missing. While this list is in no way final, it's scary to see many publishers missing from the offerings. Note that none of Capcom, Konami, or Square Enix's titles are listed at all.
Before setting Sony HQ on fire remember that this list probably isn't final, and that it will likely grow. Also remember that the UMD Passport has not been announced for territories outside Japan.
I have a f*ckton of PSP UMDs. While I think that paying for a game twice is silly, at least there's some kind of program for me to get some use out of all of these games on the Vita. Let's hope that the full UMD library will be made available for the program, and that it comes to our shores.
Can't you just use your PSP to play PSP games?
Assuming you don't sell your lolpsp to buy the new awesomeita. I honestly don't plan on keeping psp, but I'm hoping they hack vita fast enough that I can emulate all my psp goodness onto it like I do already with the psp.
Reasons behind the pricey memory is due to security...?
SauceI know you're pissed about the pricing of those PlayStation Vita memory cards, but there's more to them than just data storage, says Sony.
Sony's Muneki Shimada told Watch Impress that they went with their own proprietary memory cards instead of the more popular SD or other options to ensure an equal user experience for everyone. He noted that these fancy cards of theirs also addresses security concerns. Supposedly these cards will ensure the security of the Vita, according to the interview.
Is that why they cost so much? Is there some fancy security voodoo in there that wouldn't work on an SD card? It's good that Sony is thinking about security, but they should think about our wallets, too.
Shimada seems to want to say that these cards are more than just devices to save games; he referred to them as Vita "storage," used for patches, DLC and game data.
Also, check this hacker block move: Your PC will not work as mass storage, as Sony blocked that function. If you want to transfer files, you'll need to do so with Sony's content management program. It gets worse: There's no Mac version of this content management program yet. Andriasang says that they're working on that, though.
C'mon, Sony!
I'm going to laugh when this shit gets hack in like a week. They're pretty much fucking it up for the legit users.
