    SSD installation?

i just bought a new SSD - 128GB and need to make it the main drive, tryed to copy all the system files from C:, but no good..

what i wanted to do is to copy sys file into the SSD drive then make the SSD Master and the old HDD slave..

    um the question is..
how to copy the system files??
and does the SSD drives needs formating? (like any new HDD)

    thx BG dm(^.^)mb

Install it fresh to your SSD or you'll get errors because during installation the OS creates registry keys.

You can't copy over system files lol. And since your creating a new OS your old app's that require registry profiles won't work w/the new OS. You are gonna need to back up your doc's / files / app's and do a clean install / reformat & then select the SSD as your primary drive during the OS install.

May take ages, but that's the only plan. Unplug the drive that's going to be a slave, just have the new SSD drive installed, install OS. Plug old drive into the next available sata port then go to the bios and make sure the sata port your SSD is set to primary boot, turn on computer, move files over you need from the old drive, then format old drive.

Not w/ a USB and an SSD. Even if for some reason you want to copy the OS some files are protected >_>

Edit: You can probably do it w/ linux but it's a freaking mess.

30min at most really. For the OS. It is indeed a pain to reinstall all of your games and applications though. Not a big deal though. Well worth it.

could he create an image of his drive and restore it on the SSD?

or does it need to be the same drive he created the image of?

Fresh install the OS and copy the folders of the games. I know SCII and a horrible korean mmo Avion? w/e, those repaired the registry and it worked. We already told you w/ a USB OS install and your SSD it wont be as bad but w/e.

You can use a program to mirror your current drive to a new one. I did that a couple months back and i don't remember having any problems (though i don't remember which program i used).

Drive cloning with something like Acronis would do it too, and keep installation data for applications intact. You just can't copy the files by hand, since with Win7 you have an invisible System partition for the boot files, as well as other information locking the OS to that drive that you can't copy by hand. Without cloning software, you must do a fresh install. Master and slave designations on a drive have nothing to do with it, and aren't even used with SATA and solid state drives. It was merely designation of which drive was which, any drive can be booted to.

Norton Ghost is good for cloning drives (and easy to pirate)

You also don't need to fully re-install/update games.

Copy the game to a USB or w/e before the reformat > reformat > do a basic install or w/e game (like just install original vanilla WoW) > copy over the basic install w/ the full game. Ive done that multiple times. Only issue w/ XI is that each xpac has its own reg key, so you need to do all xpac's also, but at least you dont need to patch

I also have a 40gb ssd otw and I have a few questions. Can I just install windows on the ssd and make the pc boot off that ssd and just leave win7 on my old hdd w/o reformatting? or can I just somehow remove win7 on my hdd w/o removing anything installed on that drive?

if I am going to clone the drive, would it clone everything on there? for example, if my hdd has 100gb worth of data, would it try to clone that 100gb onto the 40gb ssd? or can i be selective

Cloning means exactly what u think it means, it's the same as using windows 7 to create an disk image. And dunno about a 40gb SSD, that's basically too small for even an OS. U gotta figure most OSs, throughout the course of updates, go to about 60gb. And even if that wasn't the case, SSDS slow down if they close to being full.. I'd return it for 60gb at least

    What?

    60 GB for OS?

I have a 40 gb ssd installed on my laptop, ..... with windows 7 pro, SC:2 and Battlefield BC2 installed on it, and only filed 25gb of space.

So he would be more than fine just installing windows on a 40gb without ever cutting close to capping it (just from updates)

i'm very new to SSDs (built a new system last night with an OCZ 120gb but i haven't even installed an OS on it yet) but i read somewhere that you definitely want to do a fresh install of windows 7 for one, not even cloning from another drive? is this accurate? it's the route i'm going either way, but this thread made me wonder.
