The worst thing i found with PSU was the lobby system, how you had to do certain missions to get to lobbies you wanted to play. Bring back starting a level and just running the whole thing, no interruptions, no planning how to get to the lobby you want.

Those of us who aren't living behind nostalgia goggles want a new game worthy of being called a sequel, not a remake with HD grafix and the same stiff and uninteresting gameplay.
I've actually had this conversation with a number of people, most of which seem to think that there'd enough people to sustain a game like this if it came out like a carbon copy of PSO:BB. PSO in general would get absolutely crucified by the media and people if it came out today in the same state it came out 10 years ago.

I'm personally in the camp that'd love to see some gameplay improvements, instead of gameplay tweaks that feel like a step in the wrong direction. PSU tried to walk the line between PSO and full MMO and it didn't really work for them imo. Sega really just needs to decide if they want it to feel like an online RPG or a MMORPG and go from there while improving most of the game's core mechanics. My biggest issue with PSU to this day isn't scenery, character designs, or anything else - it's that they tried to have six of one and half a dozen of the other, and the whole game felt like it couldn't really decide what it was trying to be.

    Watched trailer.

    I'm in there.

Just need to decide now: Hunter or Force? I always regret playing one and not the other later down the road. Might play something like Hunewearl if it exists just so I can be a support melee just to make me not rage that I can't be a force/hunter down the road.

Oh I don't mind the changes at all, I just said I was shocked people aren't railing on this one like they were with PSU. People railed against PSU because it wasn't more like PSO, and now that this new trailer comes out, people are flipping their shit because it looks so much more like classic PSO, when to me, it looks like it incorporates even less of the elements of PSO than PSU did. I never played BB, so I'm not familiar with the UI. I only played the original PSO, on Dreamcast. And Alien Front Online. That game was fucking awesome.

And Kiarax: that's my question, how does the gameplay in this video look any different than PSU's? Or any less stiff and uninteresting? There's no specifics being brought up, just these sweeping statements of "oh well clearly this new PSO2 trailer has gameplay capabilities and innovations far beyond anything PSU could have hoped to achieve."

Are people just excited because they're bringing back Hunter, Ranger and Force?

People aren't railing on it the same way no one railed on PSU before it first came out. The videos that ST were releasing wasn't the same shit they were selling to us which was their first big mistake. PSU doomed to fail from the beginning because they advertised something completely different than what it was supposed to be because Sony discontinued the PS2 HD around the same time PSU was dropping in America. It probably had potential to better otherwise.

The videos short too. Most of the people's hype is honestly because they released something. People are always gonna be excited about Phantasy Star info when it's released because it's what got a lot of people into online gaming. When we get more info, you'll start seeing more rational discussion.

Also most of the people who complained about PSU either didn't play it for that long or were the type of gamers I can't stand i.e gamers who always want shit catered to their specific wants which was why ST went the retarded route of releasing half-assed PSO content that had no business being in PSU.

Edit - Actually I can't really generalize like that because I did my fair share of bitching too while still paying for it.

Echoing AoE here. We didn't rail PSU when the first trailer came out, because it was new, shiny, and had "Phantasy Star" linked to it. Not to mention.. making cool first trailers is what Sonic Team does. They make an awesome first trailer without any of Sonic's new 'friends', or stupid gimmicks like werehog or whatever, get the hopes up of many, and then spam trailers with all that new shit and ruin people's hopes.

Here, they could be going the route of using music that sounds like PSO, and showing an area reminiscent of PSO's 'Forest' stage.. get our hopes up, and then crush them with upcoming trailers. Who knows right now.

First of all, I don't think PSUs combat is stiff and uninteresting, I was talking about PSO which has aged really badly. As for how this is significantly different to PSU, there's really not enough to judge from the trailer, but I'm perfectly happy with PSP2s combat system, which is essentially just PSU with slight improvements. This looks a tad slower and will, hopefully, have less of a focus on ridiculous photon arts. There's also the addition of jumping which has me very excited, since from the trailer it looks like it is incorporated in to combat well (aerial combos, the ability to juggle enemies in the air) rather than just as a means of jumping up ledges. It also feels like your attacks have weight behind them, even when I'm just watching the trailer and not playing myself, the attacks look satisfying and the enemies actually react appropriately rather than a split second animation where they bounce their head back a little. It's obviously too soon to judge the game entirely from what little we've seen, but it's enough for me to be very excited for it. It looks like a good combination of what was good from both PSO and PSU and finding a decent middle ground on-top of making improvements here and there.

And it's been said here already but yeah, I like that they're going back to PSOs aesthetics too. To me it had (and still has, really) a much better artstyle and more memorable outfit design. And it looks like they're getting right back to that with this trailer, all the outfits scream PSO once again and the area itself is very reminiscent of the old Forest of PSO.

Alright, all those are totally legitimate points. I just didn't understand all the hype over a short clip, but I get that it's more because "phantasy star + shiny goodness = booyah." Just trying to understand the excitement. I'm pretty stoked about it, but I didn't hate PSU as much as people here seemed to. And when it comes to taking off the nostalgia goggles, PSO especially seems so difficult to do that with. But hopefully this new one doesn't disappoint.

I really believe the main problem with PSU was the artstyle. To this day PSO weapons are rares look cool as fuck. I've never seen anything in the PSU database that made me say "Holy shit I need to get one of those!"
Same with Character creation. PSO really hasn't aged well but I could still make a Hucaseal that looked cool to me, unlike PSU's Char Creator where even with all the new options and races I never made anything I *liked*.
They just need to give the people what they loved about the original, then throw tons of new features on top of that. The shit that works doesn't need to be reinvented.

    -Big red shiny boxes
    -Memorable Tunes
-Old school chat icons (making those custom icons became an art form)
    -Auto Translate
    -Mixed servers
    -Guild Support/Custom Guild Icons
    -MAGS MAGS MAGS
    -TONS of weapons
etccccc I really miss the feeling PSO gave me back then. Hopefully they can bring some of that back.

    TL;DR
imo, Artstyle and battlesystem will make this game, with a splash of fanservice.

New stuff. RAmarl and RAcast pics mainly.

And nothing else. Sadly new info on this since the reveal is very very low.

Watch the Phantasy Star Online 2 Press Conference Live
Sega is holding a media briefing for Phantasy Star Online 2 tomorrow. Not a part of the "media?" You'll be able to watch anyway, as the event will be broadcast live at Nico Nico Video.

The thirty minute event will start at 15:00 tomorrow (July 26). Point your browser here to watch
Don't have a nico account so I assume someone else may stream it on JTV or something.

I'm not convinced that Sonic Team won't fuck this up. At best, it'll be a mediocre game on the Japanese servers with a shit run english version with absolutely no support whatsoever where the "official community representatives" belittle and insult their customers.
    http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=189176
This Edward is a GM for PSU, or maybe just a forum admin? idk I don't play or understand half the drama, but his attitude is absolutely disgusting and has ensured me that I won't be buying PSO2 unless it's either a totally different team handling it, or the servers are worldwide.

If they end up making it work, all is forgiven though.
