PSO2 on the smartphone free? I could see that. Retail version won't be though![]()
Nevermind... checking PSO-W, they're saying it's a freemium model. Free to play with purchasable shit, ala a lot of free to play MMOs out there.
What the fuck. I didn't expect this.
Yeah it just finished. It was around a 36 minute long media briefing. He gave an introduction which lasted around 4 minutes and then went into detail about the 3 versions: PC, PS VITA, and the Android Smart Phone. I think when he announced it was going to the smart phone a bunch of www text appeared. It would have to be scaled down somehow. Around the 24 minute mark he starts talking about the Beta™ followed by in game video. I didn't catch any monthly payment fee. O:
Yeah, already been translated out that it'll be a free to play model with stuff you can buy from shops for real cash, sort of like ..a lot of Nexon games out there. Only it won't be as shitty Lol.
Best news. Ever. Free to download. Free to play <3
Yeah I am a little shocked that is will be a cash shop and free to play. But there was one huge red flag that sort of hinted that prior to this media briefing. When I watched several of the feeds (I watched about half a dozen different ones) I noticed that the World "seemed" heavily instanced. I would say something like Dragon Nest just bigger. But it seems everything or almost everything is instanced based and not open World except maybe the major city hubs? I don't know I could be completely wrong. Kind of a shame it didn't go P2P. If that is the case, something is telling me there just wasn't enough time or funding or both to fully flesh this out into a P2P model.
There was an article in January (from 4gamer.net) that gives annual statistics of all the MMO games (mainly RPG and RTS) and one of the comments in the article was how different MMO games are now compared to 10 years ago: one of the key points was the amount of competition the genre has now, even in Japan. That could be a 3rd reason, they probably thought it couldn't compete in the long term as a strictly P2P model (maybe combined with not having enough funds or time). Who knows.
Ah since it is F2P, did they give out the dates when release will be as well as when the next closed beta will be (and if afterward there will be an open beta or straight to release)?
I think the next beta is mid-late April, but not sure on release dates.
And I don't think it being F2P will be *that* bad, honestly. And Guild Wars was instanced, no? And it was highly successful.
Closed beta will start near the end of April and they are looking to have around 100,000 people participate in it. Servers will be up 24 hours a day for this period.
Character creator will hit April 5th.
PC version will come out first, than scaled down smartphone version and finally Vita version.
As for F2P, I'm not worried about it unless it becomes pay 2 win.
Ah thanksYeah seems it will be mid-late April and they just edited that the character creator will be available for download on April 5th.
I can't confirm, but the dates I seen:
PC version will hit early summer
Android/Iphone version this winter
Vita version Spring 2013
Early summer seems pretty early, but I guess it's a hell lot easier to get it out quicker when you just put the game on a server and say "download this game bitch, now!" instead of having to go through the whole pressing discs process.
So, just got an email after signing up from that thing talking about signing up for the beta, and it looks like you can now at: http://pso2.jp/entry/
Haven't really messed with this yet though, way too tired. >.>
It's exactly like PSO, everyone knew it would be all instanced like this. PSO is not an open world game and it shouldn't ever be. Also most games nowadays make more money on a f2p model (and moving a p2p game to f2p has shown a huge increase in profit for older games that they've converted to the f2p model). Can't say I was expecting this to go that route, but I'm glad it is.
Excite. Now NA just needs to be released at the same time.. kind of feels like it wont though :/
I havent seen any real localization aside from their FB information..
In reality, I cant imagine it taking very long to translate though.
Forgot about voice.. just leave it as JP and be done with it.

Phantasy Star Online 2 Character Creator Demo Announced
Now that we have the details of Phantasy Star Online 2’s upcoming closed beta test, Sega have provided screenshots from the new build of the game, and have also announced a special character creation demo (above) that all fans will be able to try out on April 5th and experience the game’s highly customizable character creator.
As previously reported, one of the major new features in the closed beta is a glimpse of the game’s story. These three are from some sort of a story event.
Nice thing about it being f2p is I can most definitely play it in moonrunes now (well, I guess if they IP block I won't). Easy to play in Japanese anyway, but dealing with importing and monthly fee bullshit in Japanese is lame so I wouldn't have bothered, now I'll definitely give it a try.
If I remember right, IP lockouts can be circumvented with a proxy. I know several folks who did that with the Japanese DFO servers.
Signing up for the beta is nice and easy now, guide for those who have yet to:

If you already have a SEGA ID (from playing on JP servers previously or whatever) you can use this instead:

Don't need that second one if you're making a new ID though.
Oh, I guess I was already signed up then after following those steps from my previous post. The e-mail I got lead me to believe there was some new sign up thing, but I guess not. >.>
Oh well, back to hoping I get in!
even though its f2p, i wouldn't mind buying some of the real money stuff available in it. hnnngg, & doing that beta signup thing now, thanks for the guides
