    All depends if you're a smarter drunk when you get older. Granted this probably means you aren't drinking quite as much. This is usually what I do if you're coherent enough to pre-emp the hangover drink lots of water or something like gatorade and pop a multivitamin that usually helps. The other more awesome option if it's available is go get an IV drip. I knew a lot of pre-meds that got away with this, but unless small town the hospital is probably going to tell you to gtfo unless you're on the verge of alcohol poisoning, lol.

    Seconding the post-session (sensible) drink.

    Few glasses of water and a quick cup of tea after a night out always sorts me out for the day after. Not had a hangover to date.
    Sports drinks and such designed to rehydrate will also do a good job of preventing or helping reduce the effects of a hangover the next day.

    The real trick is remembering to drink some water/lucozade/gatorade/whatever when you get back from a night out and making it a habit.

    As I understand it part of what makes a hangover so bad isn't just dehydration but that your body's mineral/salt balance or some such gets thrown out of whack from the boozing and sports drinks are engineered to help prevent/remedy that sort of thing.
    I'm not scientician though so that may not be accurate or true.

    At OP: Just keep at it, consistency usually helps, unless you kill yourself too many times and start hating the drink. Some things I have noticed that help me drink more and feel better while I do so: eat before drinking, just not inmediately before, and do so moderately. You dont want to have an empty stomach, nor a full one. About food, something with fat is said to be ideal, as it interacts some way with the alcohol that somehow helps. There are some stupid people where I live that drink a spoon or two of oil just because of that.

    When I get back home after drinking more than I should have, I think of how many glasses of water I feel I can drink comfortably, and then add one more. So yeah, I end up drinking more water than I would like, but always seems to help quite a bit. My worst problem about hangovers has always been the headache, so I guess the water is enough to battle that as headaches usually come from the dehydration. I wonder if gatorade or some of the others you mention would help more for the reason you say, umm...

    Anyway, I think the best way is to hydrate yourself while drinking rather than hours after when you get back home, but if you cant or dont want to, doing so before going to bed is good enough to at least have a much weaker hangover. Most people will feel stupid having an alcohol drink in one hand while sporting a water bottle in the other, after all.

    Haven't really learned about it yet so I could be talking out of my ass but alcohol is a diuretic so the increased expulsion of urine before your kidneys can extract the salts is probably what is going on/what you are thinking about.

    If you are going to drink water while boozing up, do it at the bar (literally)
    Order your drink(s) and a glass of water. Bomb the water, take drinks and go.

    You inspired me to check out USF's rugby club actually, it kind of fits exactly what I'm looking for. Its basically a much more physical soccer, which is great. I also wouldnt be so ridiculously far behind others in skill, all these damn kids completely destroy me with their ball control in soccer...I won't ever catch up for at least a few years, if not more. My strength was always out hustling and being physical in soccer, which would translate pretty well to rugby. Dont know why i never thought of it before. Any club that drinks a lot gets bonus points too.

    yeah, drinking water after the fact is not nearly as helpful as drinking water while you drink alcohol. I don't know the details but it has to do with the way your body processes the fluids, by the time you get home it's too late for the water to have as much of an impact.

    I remember when I first learned to drink my friend would force me to drink water partway through. Now whenever I am drunk I automatically go into must find water mode, which is great and results in minimal hangovers. My problem is I accidentally mix myself things that are too strong which puts me out for the rest of the evening... because it is so much easier to measure a pint of long island ice tea rather than a half-pint.

    If you're fast and tall, you might want to check out the USF Ultimate team. They're pretty good and you'll definitely get a ridiculous work out, but it might not be enough contact for you.

    From two years of solid training in Ukraine with many 20 somethings, here is what I can tell you I've learned about drinking.
    Some people can drink more and it doesn't affect them as much, it's not fair, it's just reality. I have a friend who used to do this, he could drink, drink and drink, and I never saw him puke. And it's not necessarily related to BMI, as I know overwieght and underweight people that can both drink a lot. Genetics must have something to do with it.

    These rules apply if you're not already a daily heavy drinker. And obviously everyone has different things that work for them.

    I, on the other hand, am not so lucky, my metabolism is pretty slow, and I had to devise some strategies to be able to keep up.
    1. Pick one type of drink and stick to it! Preferably straight hard liquor or beer. I strongly advise against sugary mixed drinks if you're actually drinking to get drunk. They will just give you headaches and will upset your stomach. "liquor, beer, in the clear" is actually kinda true because you'll get less drunk with beer, and you'll have better judgement at least if you aren't chugging it.
    2. Drink a glass of water to match every alcoholic drink you take. You know that first pee you take when you start getting tipsy? It's clear? That's good, that's the color you want it to stay. Keep replenishing it, every time you pee drink as much water as you peed out. You'll be peeing a lot, but you won't be puking.
    3. Do make sure you have a meal probably an hour before you drink. Right before you start drinking won't help because it won't be digested into your body to help you deal with the effects of the alcohol.
    4. Try to not wander between different groups of people taking shots or chugging beers. It will just cause you to get in too deep. Find a group of friends to pace yourself with.

    I'm absolutely terrible at throwing a disc or I would. I did hear they were good, but yea my throwing is balls. Always something I should have gotten into years ago, really have no idea why I didn't. Its fun to play pickup games at rec fields though.

    I've been feeling alcohol alot more since I turned 20. 14-20 was the time when I could literally drink til I puked and I would be fine the next day. Now after about 6 beers I actually feel like I went out and drank the night before (dehydrated, not hungover) and anything beyond that I feel a little ill the next day.

    PS. Waking up drunk for the first time is NOT fun.

    PPS. If you want to increase your tolerance, learn to boat race really well. Your body adapts pretty fast to chugging beers at that point.

    I also agree with the drinking games idea. Boat races, full-cup flip cup, web, whatever--you'll start getting used to drinking beer very quickly and you'll develop a tolerance quickly.

    It's too bad about Ultimate though; the most fun drinking I've had over the last 10 years has always been with my teammates.
