I could tell on my TV that the 50 on the pamphlet was computer generated and it was confirmed when the next shot had the number at 49. So my gf and I spent the next half hour looking for numbers and wondering why we were looking for numbers. Anyone know why?

It just doesn't make sense to do this fun numbers game as a countdown to a death. Seems totally out of place.

His dad's entire death seems out of place.

edit: I mean I get Carter Bays/Craig Thomas are the basis for Marshall and Ted and this is probably something that happened to one of them, but still really weird to have something like this in an otherwise EXTREMELY lighthearted show.

I actually think the point of Marshall's dad dying was so it'd be a turning point/growing up point for Marshall as they move forward. Yeah.. it's lighthearted and comedy, but tragedy still happens, sadly.

I didn't notice the countdown until 6, so I'll be watching this again. I really enjoyed this episode, though, but the ending...

It was a good episode but there was some odd editing between scenes and I thought that the dialogue jumped about a bit, such as when Lily came in to talk about the doctor and Ted said doppelganger without Lily really stating what had happened. Didn't see the end coming at all. Very sad.

At the start of the episode, Marshall and Lily are worried that they are going to receive bad news from the fertility doctor-ganger. But they won't, so the numbers are a countdown to when they will ACTUALLY receive bad news. If you watch from earlier episodes they show Lily as being pregnant, so you know from the start they don't have fertility problems even before the doctor recommends them to go to the specialist.

    Sad ending.

This. The editing in the cold opening is why I had trouble realizing it was a doppelganger.

Realized countdown at 49 ;_; Do I pay too much attention? Thought I just assumed it was just something silly and meant nothing...

As soon as it showed Marshall's dad's garage empty when Marshall tried to call, I knew D:

Confirmed that the countdown really was referring to the death of Marshall's father. I still think it's dumb to play this game with the audience then end it with a death.

A lot of viewers were asking about the countdown clock that ran throughout the episode. What was the reason for that?
We called the episode "Bad News" and we felt like it was a way to cue the audience that something is going to happen. Obviously it builds this anticipation and you don't know if it's going to be something good or bad and I guess it being a comedy you think it might be something good, but we wanted to heighten awareness that there's going to be a moment in this episode at the end that you're going to want to pay attention to.

What kind of reaction have you heard about the clock?
There have been some pretty charged reactions to it in both directions...it's hard to strike a tone of foreboding in a half-hour sitcom, and that's kind of what we were going for. And I really should credit an art film from the 1980s, called Drowning by Numbers, that did something kind of similar to this and that's where we got the idea.
I'm feel especially jerked around when I realize they spent almost the whole season yet again talking about everything BUT how dipshit met the mother.

If the narrator is in 2030 and the kids in the narration scenes are in their mid-teens that means they're born from 2014 to 2016. Ted has got to get a move on things.

I read that Jason Segel (Marshall) has said that he won't renew his contract which expires after the 8th season, and there's no way they can do the show without him, so presumably that'll be the end.

Of course, they could offer him a ridiculous amount of money and change his mind, but yeah~

8 seasons is frankly a good run anyways~ Don't want the show to overstay it's welcome

But hopefully they don't feel the need to rush the ending because of the "deadline"
