One thing I still don't understand with this crafting system is how do miners make their money? Is there some secret to acquiring fire crystals that I'm not aware of? You mine up all this ore and then nobody can do a fucking thing with it. To smelt the ores into nuggets that are useful to blacksmiths and armorsmiths you need fire crystals, not shards. I even heard something about the alchemy recipe to convert shards to crystals no longer worked in open beta? Is that wrong or am I missing something else here?

It's true that crystals is the limiting factor, which apparently SE have noticed as well. However, even when vendored ores give the most sell back compared to a lot of items. I was selling obsidian at 20K-30K a piece. I think there was a modest market for silver as well. It's just the low grade stuff like copper, zinc and tin have almost no buyers. A lot of that is also due to the fact you can still mine copper from grade 3 nodes which I feel is a mistake.

Haha I NPCed one of those in beta. I realised its value when I saw someone looking for one in a bazaar for 5000.

There's some good value items out there if you do your research. I'm not going to share my money making secrets though.

I really wish I could level mining and smithing instead of logging and wood, but the latter fits mage classes more. I just think the former will make more money in the long run. I suppose there's nothing stopping me taking all of them to 50 over time.

When I tried this in open beta, I could only get it to turn 1 crystal into 16 shards, and not the other way around. Also, based on the lodestone recipes, I don't think it'll work the other way around, aka. shards -> crystal.
