I actually tabulated this, took some poking around nhl.com to find the information, but if Regulation wins worth 3 pts, OT wins worth 2 pts, OT/S loss worth 1 pt...then made two points columns where SO win is worth 2 pts, or worth 1 pt (if Shootout win count becomes a tiebreaker).

These stats were taken from whatever NHL.com updated in realtime from when I copied em. I think that includes all of todays games except LA, Edm, Dal, Phx, which havent finished. Vancouver and Minnesota have their wins from today included, and they were the only other non-EST games I noticed.

The number after their speculative points are what overall rank they would be. 3 point games dont seem to change the overall spectrum of the standings for most teams.

Tampa would take a significant drop cause of their reliance on extra time, as does Pittsburgh.
Boston would jump quite a bit due to all their regulation wins (they fucking choke come OT/SO though...is this a sign they cant handle pressure?), Montreal would jump a bit too.

I think you misunderstood slightly. The ideal proposal to me is a win = 2 pts and a loss = 0 pts regardless of when it occurs. The less optimal but better than current strategy is 3 pts for a regulation win and 1 pt for an OT/SO loss. As it is currently, you have teams literally play to get to overtime in many situations, and you can't fault them because it makes good strategic sense. Keep in mind this has nothing to do with my Predators bias as they have one of the worst OT records out there and a so-so SO record. I just think the emphasis is incorrectly placed currently and so do many pundits (e.g. LeBrun, Buccigross, etc.).

Yeah, the point is to get rid of this ghost point...either every game has a pot of 3 points, or every game has a set pot of 2 points. Since Bettman seems to want to give teams a brownie point for going to OT, clearly a pot of 2 points isnt in his agenda.

I'm equally ok with ditching this point for losing as well. Went to overtime and no one scored, good you both split the 2 points, congrats. What you went to OT and got scored on in the first 12 seconds, suck less bitch. I think its disgusting how teams will pussyfoot the last 5-10 min of a tie game just to guarantee a point. How is that exciting at all?

Whts funny is the bonus point in OT was first given because they felt that once a game went to OT, teams wouldnt really risk trying to win because they didnt want to take a chance, lose and get nothing. SO they figure if they give a point, it would make teams try harder in OT.

I guess clearly it didnt work so they make the shoot-out so games would have a winner. Now, they dont like that because the shoot-out takes away the "team" aspect of hockey do they try to make teams not want to go to the SO by making SO wins a tie breaker.

Clearly if its not working either get rid of the shoot-out and make games go back to an outright tie after OT or make games worth 3 points total.

There isn't much you can do to instill a points urgency in the first 2/3rds of the season. Trying to encourage a team to really want to work for that extra point when there's another 40 games to play, a max of 80 points available, where anything can happen in a 3 month span is a hopeless endeavor. Situation changes when theres 10 games to play and a team is 5 points out of the playoff picture, when every point counts.

As it stands right now, if theres 6 minutes to go in a tie game, neither team has anything to lose by silently agreeing to run the clock out and go to OT.

Unfortunately with 3 point game creates close races and a ton of excitement down the stretch of the season. So as shitty as it is, there's no incentive for the NHL to change it.

The standings have been tighter than ever this season. That definitely creates excitement and keeps fans tuned in longer than if their team was too far behind to ever come back.

Listen, I hate 3 point games too, and I hate the last 10 minutes of the 3rd period in tie games. I just know why there's little incentive for it to be realistically changed.

Win your B2B against the Ducks in the last games of the season in regulation both times, then you can feel good!

You're missing the point that it should eliminate any pussyfooting. "You want to wait your game out and go to OT to guarantee a point, sure go ahead, but you're both going to lose a point in doing so".


current system offers everything to gain and nothing to lose by waiting out to OT.

Make post-OT ties give 1 point to be decided in SO, 0 points to the loser. There's your incentive not to push for the tie.

The only way a team is really going to push for a regulation win in a tie game with 10 minutes to go is this

(where both those teams are playing each other)

or this

TeamB 81GP 89 pts
Where TeamB is playing TeamC, and Team A won the season series vs Team B. (inb4: they can chance for an OT or SO win)

basically, any situation where a team cant bank on "well we'll get one point out of it atleast"

Exactly, there's a perverse incentive to tie right now. Remove the incentive for a tie by treating all wins and losses as wins and losses, or by making the result of a tie strictly inferior to a win.
