In my cash league I had issues logging in to the ESPN site so my first 3 picks were auto-picked(Crosby, Carter, Gaborik) and all the good goalies were gone by the 4th round. In our league my pick was too low to land a Crosby/Ovechkin/etc so I thought maybe picking a 'good' goalie would work for my first.

Out of curiosity what happens if someone only starts one, does the system not count their goalie stats for the week automatically?

correct. It'll give all goalie points to your opponent. I have no idea what happens if neither of you meet the required games.
