Upgrade ESX to ESXI

I have 5 servers with ESX3.5 we would like to migrate them to ESXI 4.1 so we can use a free liscence

Is it possible without formating and loosing all the VM?

It's possible. You can run the ESX VMs in ESXi, though I don't think there's straight same-box migration capability. Shut down the VMs, move them off the datastore, format the drives, install ESXi, copy the VMs back. Something like that should work.

Edit: Definitely google what's involved beforehand, though. Make sure you've got all your bases covered.
