Even when Sam's body was out his soul was still stuck in the box. It was "about a year" (Sam's words), until he met up with Dean, and whatever time it took to get the soul out after that.

well, Dean wasn't in hell for as long as Sam was either, no? Dean's sould was in there for about half a year if I remember right, while Sam's was in there for a year. Dead wasn't tortured the entire time either - he caved in and tortured in order to avoid being tortured. Dean wasn't tortured by Lucifer and Michael, either, he were tortured by much weaker demons.

Dean was ripped apart every day, than he cut souls into small pieces. I dunno if Sam could have it much worse.

It's insane the roll that this show is on right now. Each week makes me wish I was just watching the dvds so I can watch the whole season at once, I hate waiting a week lol.

Deans tortures were confined pretty much to extreme physical pain, which while bad, wouldnt fuck you up as much as that combined with extreme psycological trauma. Lucifer, being the angel of light and master of illusion would have messed with Sam's psyche somethin fierce.

Although I think they should have just had Castiel say it was indescribably horrible or somthing, as skinned alive didnt have the impact the were going for I dont think, particularly since Dean probably was skinned alive.

The way I see it Dean was more psychological/"physical" trauma, but similar to what would happen in the real world, he just would eventually regenerate it back in Hell to do it over again. In Sam's case they can damage his actual soul and essence, like the "soul" itself is a physical embodiment, which is different from physical pain.

I think a way to see a difference is this:

Dean in hell: Outside trauma that can have effects on the mind.

Sam in hell: Direct trauma to the mind.

This may have been my favorite episode of Supernatural ever. I wonder if Jared's house is actually decorated like that lol. Also, the guy playing Kripke, awesome. All in all, A+ on this one.
