It all comes down to the game being released unfinished. Whether they built on FFXI or made a new game hardly matters here. There wouldn't be any Limbuses nor even Delivery boxes either way. That doesn't sound like much of a success...

Ancient magic spells in FFXIV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wodu_aYjSdU
They really cheaped out on spells' graphics didn't they.
LAZY
Too be honest, shouldn't be too surprising with all the reused locales ;-P
There's another video on Youtube showing Shadowsear... and Scourge 1 looks flashier than that.
Edit: there it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWSGUWLX14M
I guess that the animations are so simplistic because all spells can be AoE'd and they would cause major lag if they hit several mobs, but why make AM spells look worse than starting nukes?
lol ams btw
Strangely, that unfinished release is the "only" great thing SE done.. why? because w/t that release, SE would continue to give that bad direction until the game comes out (due to no/low complains). Since it's not finished yet, we can warn SE to take another direction before they see their product falls, that's a good compromise between us and them, they take an advantage about the players experience and we take benefits for a final game we will enjoy. I prefer seing it now than later when the game can be no more corrected.
the black shroud is a massive hump of shit, seriously who the fuck in their right mind at SE thought yeah, this zone design fucking rules everyone will love it, well no, we don't
I think that's why Gridania is dead on most servers, it's just a clusterfuck of pointless loops and tunnels, I was expecting more of a sanctuary of Zi'tah.
Personally I really only like LL simply because like in XI you can't just drop off/jump up reasonably low cliffs/differing elevation. I can't believe how annoying it is to mine grade 2 nodes in thanalan because of the damn elevation changes. I seriously get 2-3x more SP/hr in LL just because the nodes aren't 300 yalms apart. Just getting around is a bitch. While I DO like thanalan for the looks of the place, it's a pretty shitty zone to get around in. Grid is just a total shit storm with how narrow the [forest] is. It's XI's jungles x5. It seems to me that LL was the zone they put the most time/ideas into making it user friendly, followed by Uldah then Grid. Sadly Uldah seems to be the 'hot spot' on Melmond, probably due in large fact of coblyns being the best SP to grind.
Even the city design in Grid is boring.
I was doing missions yesterday and finally made my way to Mor Dhona, what a shame that a great looking zone like that stands unused.
They are terrible, we tested them on blue goats around Nophica Wells and they did shitty damage/got resisted. One of the worst things I've ever seen.
I dont know if it's just something that went terribly wrong or what but I dont see any point of using those spells. In most fights mobs dont live even long enough to get that shit casted on them.
