Gathering SP system is fucked up beyond belief. When you can get better SP failing at a higher grade than properly gathering at your "intended" grade, you know this system needs serious reconsideration. And don't give me the "you find nodes faster" line, all I had to do was pull up a map from discipleoftheland.com, make some guesswork on which nodes I want, and I went from 22 to 24 MIN before fatigue set in.
Yeah, the skill yields taper off way too soon when you look at the ranks you get the next triangulate. ability.
It's entirely possible SE considered those abilities as handicaps for beginning ranks, to make it easier... and later on, they become just a bonus since you should be a bit more knowledgeable by the time you're in the mid-20s to 30s and not entirely relying on them to find nodes, since keeping a solid skill gain from gathering means looking for nodes that you can't triangulate.
Who knows~
More knowledgeable? That's like me telling you to guess which card I chose out of a deck of cards without letting you even know which type of card I'm using. For all you know I could be using Yu-Gi-Oh trading cards with the backs painted over instead of regular playing cards. No, this system is just as retarded as asking for canvas cloth for rank 7 and 12 BSM tools and asking for a rank 30+ mob drop item for the rank 12 WVR needle.
Huh? Knowledge of gathering and areas/grades/nodes is not... random. What are you even talking about?
If you can't see the in-game balance of these two concepts, I weep for you.
"intended grade" 6-7 shots at each node, easily-gathered items, ability that gives you directions, 80 or so skill per item, less running around, more items found...
OR
"high-grade" 1 shot at each node, have to search for them manually, almost guaranteed failure, 200 skill per fail, a lot of running around, almost zero items rewarded...
I swear, so many people have blinders on regarding mechanics that impede their GRINDAN' and can't see that they might function for people or activities that aren't focused 100% on getting to the next rank.
Oh yeah, and games are never designed around information found on fan sites, or even official sites. You can't count on a player, especially a beginner, to know where to find information outside of the game.
The thing is, I don't need 3 more stacks of willow logs. I already used all the low grade materials I will ever use in grinding, I'm out of creative options that aren't hideously expensive, and I don't feel like tying my retainer up in the market wards selling mats. Why should I keep on gathering these crapsack items? Crappy system is crappy, no matter how you cut it, and the worst part is we aren't going to see an improvement in it for a quite a while. And as far as failures go, in the current system even failures are rewarding better than lower level success, which was my original gripe. Add in the fact you only got a limited number of attempts at gathering before gathering fatigue sets in, you might as well hit up the higher ranking nodes whenever it's feasible and suck it up with the failures. It might take a bit longer, but attempt to SP ratio is most certainly better. Certainly makes all the r50 gatherers that much more impressive in their dedication.
Real question;
This game playable yet?
I played 10-15 hours over the last 2 days, and no, the game isnt playable. Everything is still shitty and slow, and the only way to progress rapidly is to abuse the system (take the best leve, link them, drop before you complete it), or play 5min at behest every 30 min (and good luck finding one that isnt empty, or full).
[edit]
Unless you have friends to play with, don't bother. This game isnt meant to be played solo at all, and the shitty balances on everything is going to make you rage.
I don't really get it. I talk shit about FF14, and i DO NOT log in to or play it, ever. You talk more shit than I do and you played it for 10-15 hours in a 2 day period, and your verdict is the game is not playable. Am I missing something, are we in bizarro world where an unplayable game is a game you play for approx 12.5 hours out of approx 32 hours awake?
I was trying to push a few more levels to unlock the next mission, and holy shit, behest design is as terrible as ever. The last 3 hours at Nophica Well were strangely reminiscent of the time I spent in Dragon Aery...I was almost hoping to see a giant dragon spawn at some point. It would have been an improvement over this bullshit.

You would think SE had learned by now and would designs open events around a crowd of various size, but no...only the 8 chosen one are allowed to xp. If you happen to be too slow on the trigger, or afk'd 27min and 5sec...too bad.
It wouldnt be terrible if you could actually do it solo (reliably). 95% of the behests are empty, but sadly, you need around 8 to get the most out of it.
Anyway, behests was fun before when it was just something you would join whenever it was up, but now, you pretty much have to camp it to level. Unless you enjoy killing trash around the outpost.
WoW and LotRO subscription expired at the same time this week, that's why I decided to check the sidequests and complete one more story mission (which is the only part I enjoy). Playing this games 12 hours every 3 months is about as much as I can take...especially since I managed to uses all my anima in that time (no way I'm walking for anything).
Being an hypocrite is just not for me. I wouldn't trashtalk it if I hadnt experienced the horror of this game first hand. However, I'm almost enjoying this. It's like watching a bad movie that is so terrible it become entertaining.
I'm not a hypocrite, I played the game when I got it and realized what a piece it was, and whenever its given a laughable update, instead of log in and test it again, I happen to be intelligent enough to realize how little effect they actually have had on the game so far. Someone who actually cares will probably quantify the updates in a post and make it sound amazing, but I'm not buying it.
It's totally playable solo! Yesterday I spent 4-5h running around getting every camp/node I didn't have (about 25 of them) and solo'ing r70 mobs along the way!
Yes, there is sarcasm in there somewhere.
I seem to enjoy the game. Having a LS with several active r50s probably does help a bit. All I have been doing lately is getting all my lowbies to 25-30 solo, doing leves and grinding when I'm out of leves. I also have a group a people that get together and kill the roaming NMs just about every day. I'm a tank and enjoy the fights, I find it to be fun holding a group (4+) mobs without losing aggro or getting owned.
Everyone has their own opinion though, and It seems most people do not enjoy the game that much just yet. And, I'm not sure I would be enjoying it as much as I do it is was not for having 15+ r50s to do stuff with, so having an active LS might help some people get their entertainment from the game.
It wasn't playable at launch. It's playable now, it's just bad. Imo.
I wasnt speaking about you, no need to get defensive.
It's perfectly fine to hate it from the get go. I thought the design looked stupid in the preview, the alpha was an abomination, the beta was terrible. I never had any expectation for this game, and wasn't going to give SE a single penny. However, the game was given to me, and I decided to use that opportuniy to make a reflexion about shitty game designs.
You would think that being able to play the game for more than an hour or two would mean the game is "playable" to an extent. I don't even play it every day, but when I log in and I have a ton of Anima and Guardian's Favor, I burn it all, making a significant amount of progress in gathering/crafting over the course of a few days, then put it down again because travel time can get unbearable with no other option besides running.
I don't know about gathering class, but you wont make a significant progress on melee doing 8 leves after lv30, unless you find a bunch of people to link them with (which is quite difficult if you just log randomly).I burn it all, making a significant amount of progress
If playability means that you can sit on your chair and mash key to perform stuff in the game, then yes, this game is playable. I don't think that's what people call playability though. The real question is, is it possible to enjoy your time spent in this game, and the answer is hardly.
That's pretty much all I do when I (scarcely) log on anymore, /shout for a few to link leves. Only a few times where I didn't actually get people, do the leves and be logged off again within an hour or two.
I don't necessarily find that to be a satisfying experience, but it's still pretty easy to do and will always equal at least one full level all the way to 50. In the 30s you're looking at 2-3 levels per link session.
They said they were changing gathering leves to be more useful. Can't remember if they said they're boosting SP in general tho. Botany is ridiculous however. I don't even log grade 5 and I'm almost 45. Grade 4 just has way more useful items. Unlike mining where grade 5 at Halatali is godly, you have to go back to grade 4 at Cedar for that kind of experience with BTN.
