People pull that card because in 2010, there is a certain level of expectation as there have been many MMO's since the EQ/FF/UO days. When you launch something new that nobody has ever seen, there's nothing to base it off of or compare it too so there is a certain innocence/bliss. With that being said, the little things that suck (like losing exp, de-leveling, camping mobs for 8-16 hour windows) are now more noticeable than ever. In 2010 when you release a game with fundamental issues like a crappy chat window, shitty UI, laggy menu system, botched EXP/Skill gain system, you are gonna get bombed for it. Nobody is safe anymore. APB lasted like 2 weeks or something because it was fail.
I think it's important to remember that MOST people on these forums really WANT FFXIV to be awesome and I'm sure we'd all like to enjoy it. I kept telling my buddies that they were going to make a new FF with a modern WoW-like UI and system with the grit that FFXI had (these were my hopes). I'm hoping they can still keep it going and hopefully fix the little things that are causing the headaches.
