Another worthless patch that fixes problems 99.9% don't experience. Hooray!

I think I'm done with the game til the PS3 release at least. Was doing a quest in the Nanawa Mines before maintenance. Kill some weakass gnats for their gnats brains or whatever for 15k and a cluster. Sounds good! Oh, the last 4 gnats are in a cave with 3 skeletons 10 levels above you. If you try to pull the gnats out of the cave they will immediately reset. SOMEBODY TOOK THE TIME TO DESIGN THIS STEAMING PILE OF SHIT QUEST.

It just got me thinking about my flawed logic in believing that things would be good because FFXI eventually became good. It's a different world today than it was 8 years ago and FFXIV isn't going to weather the storm when it drops below 20k subs after the free trial period ends. Every single game system is horribly broken and it will take years just to get the game working right. Since they appear to have very few people left working on the project (no support staff, very few improvements since alpha) I just don't see the game ever making it to retail-worthy status.

I guess the honeymoon period is over for me.

Did it not occur you to that there's a fucking massive patch in about 3 weeks that everything is going into, and so all patches up until then are going to be just minor bug fixes?

At the end of the day, if you don't like FFXIV enough to wait 3-4 weeks for a patch, chances are the patch isn't going to keep you playing even if it came tomorrow. Maybe the game just isn't for you. The rest of us who do want to play the game but would quit if shit isn't fixed soon are patient enough to wait for the November patch, especially when SE have given us that month free.

You're probably right. There's so many "wtf" core game design elements that have slowly worn away my enjoyment of the game that it will take more than one patch to get me motivated about the game again.

Don't mind me, I'm just in mourning.

Well everyone is holding out for the November update, I know that lots and lots of people were gonna quit till they announced the free month.

If the November patch doesn't turn out godly I can see this game APBing, but there does seem to be a strong white knight fanboy community at least on my server that will defend this piece of shit game to death. If this game didn't have Final Fantasy on it, it would have died by now.

I totally agree. But at the same time, saying "omg this patch didn't fix shit i'm quitting" when they've already told people in as simple language as humanly possible that all the effort is being put into the late Novemeber patch, leaves one to wonder what the hell is really wrong with people. I mean do they just not know how to read? How could people possibly have expected today's patch to have fixed anything substantial, when they've already told us exactly when to expect a patch that fixes things which are substantial?

(Not point fingers at you here btw, just saying..)

My complaint about the patch was just residual rage from my overall disappointment with the game. It's not the reason I'm quitting.

If you get some things wrong when you make an MMO that's perfectly acceptable and expected. If you get every single thing wrong...even things that you have cheat sheets for that you can't get wrong...even things you previously got right...I have to question the future of such a game. I'm not willing to wait 2 years for a playable product.

I got most of my fun from the game playing the market and crafting things that people wanted to buy. The market has degraded to nothing and will only begin to recover after items are made BoE, which I don't see happening in the next 2 patches. So I'm left with guildleves (awful WoW dailies - admit it), party grinding (completely mindless due to both game mechanics and the sp system in general), and spam leveling crafts (actual work that is so horribly unfun that somebody should be paying me to do it.)

The worst part is that some of the key components of the game can't be fixed, such as complete lack of story from 1-50 and bland environments.

Why does making stuff BoE (I assume that means bind on equip?) fix the item situation? This is a real question, not some pseudo jab or poke.

Gonna randomly white knight this game for one second re: the missions. The cutscenes are staggeringly fantastic. I just did R26 uldah and it was so friggin good. It's actually keeping me playing despite all the other horrid shit right now. Want more story.

Is it still bugged? I remember hearing people complain about the instances in the black shroud, which is why I've been waiting.

I honestly don't understand what was the big complaint was with the Rank-26 mission. It was incredibly easy and I didn't once get the "you are about to leave the instance" message. I think people were just not realizing that the blinking icon at the top of the screen indicated that you have a new command to utilize (just like the "Apply Ward" command in the rank-15 Gridania fight). In this case it's "Call" which calls your partner to your location. It's just a big MGS test. Your partner will alwayts bee-line it to your objective, so follow them if that's what you want. If you want to avoid something, call your partner to you to force them to go a different route to avoid an enemy. I don't think it was ever bugged at all... although it could use a little status effect icon for the short time you're "invisible."

Thanks a lot for the info, like I said, I hadn't done it myself, had only heard about it. Will give it a try later.

I was also expecting the worst... Then, I noticed the icon and "Call" and what it did. Then it was cake.

That's not white knighting at all. The story, at least through the cutscenes, is excellent. I don't think anyone can deny that. Unfortunately, when lumped into the rest of the game, it merely resembles a tasty nugget of golden corn encased in a pile of shit. On the floor.

I agree that story is good, I just don't think it really has that much of a place in an MMORPG.

Lets face it, in an MMORPG that you play several hours a day, the amount of time you'll spend in cut-scenes is a very small percentage, it just doesn't make sense to have a lot of cutscenes and story building time in a multiplayer environment. It's not consistent with the design of the format.

What you do have to deal with are game mechanics, the in-game economy, the GUI, leveling, etc. A good story that compliments those is great, but if a game lacks those, especially for an MMO, it's like a shiny car with no engine.

The main thing that making stuff BoE fixes is that crafting isn't worthless. Right now it's impossible to expect time/money value of crafting to pay off. It takes FOREVER to make items, because they involve like 800 different things, and it doesn't help that the interface is clunky as all hell. Furthermore, when someone wants an item, they don't have to go to a crafter, they can just find someone selling their old item that they've repaired up. Making things BoE forces everyone to go to a crafter. If it didn't take 8 years to synth a single item then it might be worth the time investment, but as it stands crafting is just pouring money down the drain.

I don't think it needs explaining why BoE is necessary really but yeah...items never get removed from circulation. More and more people quit before getting to higher levels (this is true in every MMO and is going to be horrific in FFXIV) but more and more items need to be made to reach each crafting level. Considering we've already reached the point where 95% of finished items under level 30 are a wash or worse I'd say BoE is a necessity.

An Iron Haubergeon takes 120-140k in mats to produce (seriously take a look at the shard costs) and sells for 120-140k. Add a search feature to the wards and that price plummets to 40-50k because there are already more per server than people will ever need. Ten whole levels of armorer become free money for the shard sellers. Of course Bronze Haubergeons are already worth far less than mat costs.

The story is far too incomplete to be anything. Lore does not equal story in game when the two do not intertwine.
