This question has been asked before I'm sure, but I couldn't find an appropriate solution in my searching: I'm installing FFXI from scratch on a new computer. I download the Win7 PoL client from SE's site, then install FFXI and the expansions from my old discs. I fire up PoL and it immediately checks for updates (PoL viewer updates, not to the login screen yet). It updates, and restarts, but when it does it can't restart, citing a missing file and it tells me to reinstall PoL. After uninstalling and reinstalling multiple times, its gotten quite old.

Is this just a permissions problem? I have McAfee Security Center of my new machine but I've given PoL full access in the firewall. I originally tried to take the shortcut of installing PoL/FFXI and then copying my entire PoL folder over from my old computer. This allowed me to start up PoL and go through my login, but as soon as it tries to log in, PoL simply freezes/crashes with no message given as to why. There were also times earlier where it would say 'polhook.dll was unable to be overwritten', though the last few times after updating PoL it simply crashes on restart, going straight to the message 'a file is missing, reinstall PoL'. I've tried restarting my machine at various points through the install/update cycle, but that hasn't seemed to help.

I've read around and people mentioned polhook.dll.tmp not properly overwriting the original, but I search and can't find even the .tmp file. I've also read about McAfee giving false positives for some FFXI files, but that doesn't seem to be the case here (though it may still be related to my security software). So while I'm sure this question has been asked before, I've wasted enough time trying to do this solo, and could use some advice from someone more fluent in these issues.

This sounds similar to the problem I've been having - I bought a new PC with Windows 7 and McAfee pre-installed - just within the last couple of days the real-time scanner has started getting false positives on the POLCORE.DLL file. It quarantines the file and if you try to start up POL you get that same message, that a file is missing and you need to reinstall POL. The only way I've found to fix it (since I'm not especially familiar with McAfee) is to restore the file from quarantine and turn off the real-time scanning (I don't use the comp for anything else, so not a huge issue).

It sounds like this may be what is happening to you - McAfee is quarantining the file, but not telling you about it.

Yes, there should be no problem with this setup. DD/nin, RDM, BRD can do most NMs in aby with little to no issue. With DD atmas, Ovni should be dead before PDT becomes anything other than barely noticeable. RDM and BRD need to be quick on dispels, but that's about it.

Well it could be done rather reliably with 6 at 75. 10 more levels, refresh2, ballad 3, cure4 on brd, viable 5 hits with better weapons for sam, more haste gear available, and I'm sure more things that escape my mind atm...yea I'd assume 3 competent players would be able to kill it.

Could do it at 75 with samx2,brd,rdm,whm. With ballad3 and refresh 2 you should be able to drop the whm at least, probably the second sam too.
