Eh, I may be wrong here, but I think he was refusing to come back, which is why they had the kinda meh story involving him all season with all the clones. At first he even refused to come back for the finale. As far as I can see, Smallville is the only successful thing he's been a part of, and he was a very well-liked character on the show for sure, he owes it to the fans, imo. Though I think bringing him back just for the finale worked because of the nice dialogue/setup for the future with things, it felt right.
Didn't shave his head. He said previously he was wearing a skull cap for his return. Was also said those reports of him not coming back were bogus to begin with and never had any truth to them. He just wasn't willing to become a series regular again. No idea how the neurotoxin worked but seven years passed between the time he was infected by it and the time he was elected President so plenty of time for something to have helped him out.
I thought it was just a way for them to wrap things up without having to go too deep. Yeah it sucked, but meh. Lots about SMallville sucked.
Yeah, I don't know the whole story behind it (and I doubt any of us ever will) but he came back, he delivered a great performance and I'm happy with it, that's all that really matters.
Well, his contract was up that year that he left and he choose not to come back. He probably was either tired of the role or wanted to do something else (that possibly didn't require him to shave his head).
In all honesty, I think they planned on bringing Lex back but only via referencing him using the best parts of the clones and he would re-appear when they looked into the future. I am sure he wanted to be a part of the Finale and asked to come back for the episode and they squeezed him in.
Yeah, which I thought was cool. I think he did hate shaving his head, though and he'd been apart of the show for a long ass time.
One thing I will miss though.. even though Tom Welling's acting was rather questionable (and terrible in some cases), is Erica Durance's portrayal of Lois. She did a really, really awesome job. She played the emotional scenes quite well too, especially the ep before the finale. Granted that episode was terrible IMO (contrived angst ftl with the "I can't marry you Q_Q"), but you can't blame her for that. She acts as she's written to. The writers just suck.

Tom isn't as strong an actor when called upon to do the staple CW emotion of angst. He seems to be better with comedic stuff and even playing other characters (alternate Clark Luthor, the episode "Transference" when Clark & Lionel switched bodies, etc). Throw in red K Clark too, he's always great there.
I skipped all of the posts. I stuck with Smallville for longer than I should have. I tried to watch the last season, but was too far behind in what had happened.
Is it worth it to watch the last season? I got up to around the parts where they had Lex clones.
Btw, So funny how the actor who played Lex, didn't wanna do it anymore cause he wanted to grow his hair out for other parts, but his hair is stupider in "Breaking In"
I think 5-6-7 is Smallville's worst and it got steadily better from there. Season 10 isn't "good TV" still, but if you enjoyed S1-2-3 at all, I think you'd enjoy S10. I think it's safe to say Season 10 of Smallville was its best season because the show knew what it was, the actors knew what it was and they just had fun with it and threw in as much comic/movie related stuff as possible.
Homecoming was, imo, one of the best episodes. actually both 100th and 200th were fantastic.
