FFXIV Random Speculation/Question Thread XI: "How you liking that Beta Phase 5?"

So despite cancelling pre-order in beta, bored waiting for rift so picked up ff14 today for less than the cost of a pizza, what the flying fuck am I meant to do ingame once I'm at my cap of leves for the time period ( is that still 48hrs? )?

Is there any reasonable way to level besides waiting, or just grind mobs? Or troll for other people to join up with? ( lol @ finding other noobs in the starting area amirite ).

All I want right now is to stock up on fire crystals and shards, what's the fastest way to do this with no alchemy or spending gil?
...or rather, what should I kill to get them and where?

Not sure what your current setup is, but you should be able to have 4 tabs total (2 tabs in each of 2 windows). If you activate tabs 3 or 4, it's automatically in a second window. If you haven't already, use the second tab to keep it hidden, but otherwise you'll be forced to have it out on its own. I'm not sure if you could drag it down so it's mostly off the screen?

It's pretty much almost exactly how it was when you started the game up from scratch. And as it is, there's far too much 'stuff' on the screen for me, so it's all nice and neat and shoved into corners or at the very bottom/top of the screen.

Still dunno why you can't have all 4 tabs in the same window.

Yea, not having them all nice and neat one after another (since there's plenty of room there still for 2 more 'tabs'), is kind of... weird.

I gave up, couldn't take having a SECOND box of crap up and shoved all that damned blue neon text into battle. Then logged back out, heh. I'd probably end up clicking on it or something if I'm being silly and using the mouse (it's my talk button for vent anyways), and screwing up what I'm targeting in the first place.

Behests are fun and good SP, but only once per hour.

Behest question : why sometimes people yell at each other for attacking a non-behest mob?
By the kind of insults I read it was like it ruins SP gain but I fail to understand why.

haven't seen that kind of people, last few I had with jp... just aoe all the shit down thats not leve/beshest mobs, dosen't matter what it is.

Same reason people yell for attacking more than one mob/group at a time. If the monster's name isn't red, you get significantly less experience when killed. I think you get roughly half the SP you'd normally gain from a red-named mob.

It's based on percentage of mob hp remaining. If a mob has 80% of its HP remaining at the time you engage it you only get 80% of the sp it would give once you engage it and kill it. That is why people don't like it when you AoE a huge pack of 10 mobs. All that damage is worse than completely wasted.

As for killing non-behest monsters that happen to be around during a behest, it's because the skill/time for non-behest mobs just isn't worth it.

For those talking about tabs, yeah, it would be really nice to have the option to put all 4 tabs into one window. I'm pretty sure I saw it mentioned that more tabs were window were in the longer-term plans. But having 2 open windows is still a nice option for some as well, IMO it's far more effective to have all your chat lines in one window with everything else in a 2nd.. but that's just me. Turn off the second window if you don't like it. I'm not sure if it's turned on or off by default now... pretty sure it was off by default when it was first added to the game.

Back in FFXI I really liked that everything was one window (while looking at other MMOs and not understanding how anyone could like multiple windows) but FFXIV has far more scrolling in the chat box and it's really easy to lose track of LS or PT chat unless it is separated out.

I prefer two chat logs, there's things I want to see in my log from battles or crafting but don't want to have to switch tab every time. I just wish I could control where system appears. I suppose I could make the second tab on my first log my chat log instead of the first one.

I just wish they'd merge the NPC chat box back into the others, since it sucks not being able to expand my chat log without them overlapping each other. Someone says it's possible to move the NPC box but I haven't had any luck.

Does anyone know how/if you can rig the SP Necrologos leves so you can continue fighting for the full 30 minutes until losing? I remember reading the other day that you can somehow ensure this happens every time (possibly involving the two sets of mobs that appear in one pop area?), but I couldn't get it to happen today. Wondering if anyone knows more about this.

Hate to criticize since you were trying to help but this is a kind of shitty answer because mobs quite obviously have a main crystal/shard drop and this doesn't really differentiate. What I mean by main is it's quite obvious that some will drop more crystals/shards of one type more often than the other types unlike in FFXI where mobs just dropped a single type. I was hoping someone actually had some actual experience instead of a website link which is why I asked here. I already tried using yg and kept coming up on mobs who didn't have fire shards and such as their "main" drop.

An example of what I mean would be something like the lost ewes near limsa lominsa... I killed a ton of those for sheepskin at one point while leveling different classes and came away with a LOT more wind shards and crystals than the other types they drop. These Lost Ewes would still show up on a yg search for water and lightning (I think that was the other type) shards but you'd be wasting time farming them if that's all you wanted. (would be easy to just use the drop % on yg but, it's not as accurate as one would hope for)

Best way to get fire shards/crystals is just to grind normally on the coblyn of your choosing IMO.

Or grind on something that drops wind, sell the wind and buy twice as many fire shards with the cash.
