You're right that $10 is no big deal, but to me that's not reason enough to give it to them every month. I find it to be the equivalent of walking into a store and buying something you don't think is worth the cost just because it's cheap. It just seems weird that people would pay for something when they don't think it's worth paying for, regardless of how cheap it is.
Relative to what else I spend my money on, booze, food, gas, kayak launch fees to go fishing, $10 is really nothing considering how much money I spend a month. Because I do get some sort of enjoyment out of the game, I will pay for it since they're charging. If asked my opinion of if they should charge or not, it's obviously no. The game has come a long way and I do like how they team is pretty responsive with stuff that we want, but we're still missing a lot of stuff like, like d box for instance, and the stupid ass server lag. Stuff that really they shouldn't be charging because it's still in the game and they can't fix it until 2.0. But again, relative to what I spend my cash on, $10 a month is like a glass of wine at the bar after work.

It's because most people wanna play to get the benefits of that storyline or items that SE said would never be able to be obtained after 2.0. They want to be ahead of the crowd that will come past 2.0 and they want the special items to show off. I believe that is why most people are paying atm, obviously it doesn't apply to everyone. SE did a smart move on that considering most MMO gamers tendencies to want shinies and be unique snowflakes.

Thanks for the response on this. I'm glad you find the game entertaining at least.

Ah, got it. So the game isn't worth it, but possible large epeens and pretties to show off in the future are. I should never have underestimated the power of large epeens and pretties.

In any case, if you enjoy it and think it's worth it to pay more power to you. I hope that anyone that stays has a lot of fun.

Dumb question, but is there a way to be reminded of your security question/answer? Made it a long time ago and can't really remember, hoping it won't screw me later if I need to change anything on the account.

I just started and i've got a couple questions:

Other than story line (started in Ul'dah), what should I be doing quest wise?
What are guildmarks? (saw something about them being suspended? Any idea how long?)
Is the party system like XI and when should I start partying up for better xp?
Where can I find a current gear guide and xp spot guide? (everything google gives me is dated in 2010)

I've done levequests for money, Thaumaturge at 16, and Conjurer at 7.

Thanks for the help. I'm having a hard time liking it, but i'm really trying to give it a chance. Hopfully with some help here, I can turn this frown upside down.

Quests: None of the current quests really yield any notable rewards besides exp. I would do them all just for the exp. They generally each give you a piece of gear or food, which you may want to just sell unless it's a piece you'll grow into.

Guild Marks: They were originally rewarded to a class for doing a leve from the city in which the class' guild is located. (Such as doing a Weaver leve in Ul'dah, or a battlecraft leve as Archer in Gridania) They were used to actually purchase a few of each class' abilities and traits. They just changed it recently so you automatically learn everything at designated levels... so guild mark rewards were removed and any purchased abilities/traits were refunded. They have not made the decision whether or not to completely remove the system or to re-introduce different things to be purchased with the marks, so they are still sitting there in our "Currecy" tab until they make that call.

Partying: I would probably not bother with scraping together a party until like 20. It might be just my preference, but once you get a hang of your class and your leves, you can push your way to 20ish in any class relatively quick. However, since exp is not divided amongst your group, you'll purely benefit from grouping up with even one person more than soloing as you'll either be killing faster or killing stronger enemies.

Gear/Exp guides: As for gear, you can check out mooglebox.com which is the best item/recipe database in my opinion. It won't tell you what to wear, but you can see the stats of everything in your range and choose accordingly once you understand what PIE/INT/MND all do. They also have a mob locator, but I haven't checked it out. You'll just eventually have to learn the usual which mobs suck, which ones are easy, and which ones are weak to your THM's or CNJ's elemental spells.

As soon as you get Thundara, which I think is 18 THM, you can solo it to 50 faster than being in a party, except for maybe a stronghold party. Find things weak to thunder (crabs, jellyfish, eft, etc.) and if they are +0-3 levels, you'll have no problem. Also, getting Pugilist to whatever level gives featherfoot now helps a lot with that too.

Nophica's has some orobon/angler camps at ranges 30-32, 33-36, and 37-39. Crab camps higher than 29 don't seem to exist in the sense of the newer mob camps of 8+.

    http://www.mooglebox.com/thanalan/index.php
I can only vouch for La Noscea and Coerthas (when it goes live) personally as far as data collection goes, but this tracks most/all of the 8+ mob camps.
Sign of a "new" camp: level range is:
    10-12
    13-16
    17-19
and replace 10's digit as appropriate.

If you're new and trying to make some money, just take up botany or mining and put stuff on the wards. Those two classes can actually make you some cash pretty quick.

Is there a significant drop of players since the free trial ended? Or whoever were still logging ended up paying?

Interesting. So far it looks like they didn't lose too many people when it went P2P. I would've figured they'd lose 75% of their players. Guess everyone who really wanted to quit already did. 35k paying subs for a game like this wouldn't be so bad for S-E if they can maintain it. Their complete dev team can't be more than 5 people since launch so they might even be turning a modest profit all things considered.

Gulk had a list, but was confusing to read. He said around roughly 2000 player drop on all servers IIRC.

That's vague. Do you mean 2000 per server or 2000 across all servers? Also does that include people who had an account but never logged in or actual "active" accounts?

    Edit: Actual question too!

For the "Lambs of Dalamud" event-thing, is it true Alfgar spawns on the hour?

And for CNJ I'm guessing one of these elemental boarskin ringbands is what I want for hands, yeah?

Also I still don't believe English event GMs exist.

I'm pretty sure ringbands are the only high level handwear with any mage related stats so yea.

Just pick up stone or wind, not worth getting both really only a 3 Matk difference.

I guess that'd that'd be across all servers. I dunno if that's the same stuff, but from what I saw on OF from people searching how many people are online, majority of the servers had around 200 people online at a time at most.
