FFXIV Config > General > Sound > Play sound when application is in background. FFXIV Config is that external application you can only run when FFXIV is not running.
In other news, I let my subscription expire, paid for it again, and now I can't log into the forums. Seems to be an issue with a few other folks as well -- anyone else having (or know how to solve) that problem? I get this as soon as I log in (after the re-direct back to the forums):

EDIT: I see I haven't refreshed the tab in at least a couple of hours. My bad.
Query: If you're over ten levels above a mob, do they just stop dropping items? I've been a bit frustrated farming bomb ash.
Nope, just sounds like bad luck. Which bombs are you farming? Chances are you just happened to luck upon the few that refuses to drop anything, period.
Someone do me a favor and post on the official forums asking about a player poll update?
Clearly I'd do it myself but uh... I can't post on the official forums cuz of no subscription so.
It's coming before 1.21. Was announced on the French forums.
Does anyone know if the company leve NPC cycles through the randomly-selected leves over time? I wonder if I can just kill time in the immediate area just to avoid doing one of those crappy protect-this-moronic-NPC leves. I'm getting to the point where I might take the leve and immediately abandon it because I can't stand them... but I would rather not burn through my allowance too fast. ;/
Hm, don't the normal leves cycle through whenever you complete any old leve? If you're doing company leves on your 30something classes and not your 50, maybe you can bring some standard battle leves and do one of those if you are given the "protect" company leve. Just a thought, no idea if it'll work
Pretty sure it works the same as the leve counter. Either complete a leve or wait until the next leve cycle.**
**This is a complete guess.
I believe they do change but not often and its on some kind of timer maybe. Maybe changes after a day change ingame?
I've seen it change once but I had a small break between checking. Spam talking to him didn't change it again, so I think it changed with the day.
All of them are on a 15 min timer except the new one that opens up at max rank. That one you can complete in about 5 mins, or however as fast as you can kill and meet quota.
You can't "abandon" it per se... It doesn't show up in your journal like other leves.
What I do is accept the leve and just log out, then log to character screen, log back in, and check him again. The NPC always gives you a new one this way, but you lose the leve allowance used to flag the previous one. Just keep doing that until you get the /poke leves (Eye of the Miner/Back in Back). Works like a charm.

You can speak to the NPC during the leve and choose to abandon the leve. I had to do it when I got overwhelmed by a bunch of shit from the NPC protection one since the mobs don't territory-return.
Hmm has that always been possible? Coulda sworn he didn't have that option awhile back. Good to know though since that will save some time lol
I was never able to figure out exactly what trigger the change, but the few time I afk'd next to him, it didn't change for a very long time (I always gave up before). Completing another leves or behest changed it, and going back to town/coming with new leve also changed it at least once (I was surprised to see it change since I went to town to get new leves for that).
Maybe leaving the "zone" is enough to trigger the change? I don't know. It might have been a leve reset as well.
How easy is it to get to max level? I really enjoyed the time it took in FFXI to get to 75 (earlier years), and how everyone mastered their job by the time they reached that level.
No more than a month to get 1 class to R50 for any type of active playtime just for a general gauge. Hardcore grind can probably do 1-2 weeks. I remember XI back in the day would take 2mo for a 75 pre COP fresh start (maybe that was just my personal take)
But there was alot of stuff you could do on your way to 75 like limit break quests (damn you RDM Maat fight), AF quests (coffer key farming anyone?) and proper sub lving.
R1-20 shouldnt be too difficult to complete within a day or 2 solo.
R20-36 will take some dedicated work to trudge thru this slow part.
R36+ will be fairly more quick and enjoyable with plenty of shout parties and xp scales better per kill.
Even class quests and missions give a decent chunk of xp upon completion so do those on your downtime.
