Pretty sure you need to be in the top 20 as well.
I'm confused then, where do the off-hand tools come from if not the chest.
So rather than put the highly valuable ra/ex gear as a personal reward for people who contributed and ranked well in the supply phase (who clearly have a DoL job leveled) they put them in the randomly distributed loot pool.
"Thanks [MIN] you raised supply rating by a shitton in the supply phase and clearly put a lot of effort into this, here's a culinary knife of mild usefulness."
"Thanks [pt of 8] you won the instanced fight and may or may not have done a damn thing in the supply phase, here's a very unique and useful ra/ex AF that potentially none of you can use."
Never mind the "top 20" thing is a shit concept to begin with. You're not rewarded based on how much you contribute, rather you're rewarded or not based on how much everyone else contributes.
I agree, I was expecting something a little more tailored to the DoL for those items.
I think they wanted to give something a little extra to those who contribute, but (and as folks have been complaining heavily they did not want to be the case) not prohibit someone from gaining these items because they did not (or could not, because of others with more time//botting) get into the top 20. Put too good of an item there and 1) the playerbase gets upset that it's too hard to get and 2) folks can be locked out from *ever* having the chance at getting one.
Having said that, I'd have rather they tied it to an achievement. But regardless, it's a tough balance to strike when you want a server to work together to reach a goal, reward those who contribute significantly towards that goal, but not lock anyone out who can't be a top contributor.
It's only hard because they elect to make it hard (on themselves, us, everyone). Instead of "top 20 contributor", they could have just as easily set the goal as "you must supply X amount of points". They could even have the additional qualifier "everyone together must reach an overall point goal of X". Same general idea, but less potential for stupidity.
With SE's idea of "balance", in terms of the ridiculousness of things you have to suffer through to get anything of mild value, I shudder to think of what anything of extreme value will be like to get if we don't manage to derail them out this stubborn line of thinking. Anything like a relic weapon would take 1 year of a lot of work, money, time, etc. For each stage. And probably a 1% change of it actually upgrading even after you put in all that work (it's just too strong, right? just can't give these things away!). Maybe, for fun, a chance of it breaking as well. Woo! "Almost got that fully upgraded Excalibur after 37 years... but it broke on the last stage." Because, you know, it would feel more "rewarding" that way.
What kinds of gear do i have to convert to get lightning magic potency materia? do different types of gear produce different materia?
according to a chart someone in my LS made: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...MOGtlUkE#gid=0
MRD, LNC, and 2h-THM arms produce them.
This website is also pretty good for showing all the possibilities:

Thanks. very helpful links
http://www.mooglebox.com/materia/index.php
Also has the info displayed now.
It should all be the same since SE released a chart themselves a while ago (the link Grey posted).
edit:
As if Veil materia wasn't worthless enough, why are they meldable to off-hand tools?
Nvm that it's the -only- thing you can meld to them.
Yeah those materias are incredibly "WUT." Mostly already useless materia with useless stats only meldable to useless items on classes that don't use the stat.
B-b-b-b-b-but it might reduce elemental instabilities or something!
Square Enix - The home of making people paranoid that random things (direction/moon/stats/etc.) affect everything.
It's like they're doing it on purpose now!
Anyone know how to stop or reduce the rate of lure breaks while fishing? ive been fishing at this same grade 5 spots since like lv.33 or 34, and it was fine until 47. Then i started breaking lures seriously every 3-5 minutes. seriously, between lv. 47-48, ive broken 3 times as many lure as i have from 1-46. ive increased my gathering a fair bit and it seems to have helped, but i still soemtimes break 2 or even 3 lures back to back
