Cashing check

School refunded my cost for tuition the other day for 981$ in my name.

I don't have a bank account and my license fell out of my pocket just the other day (bad timing)

What are my options for cashing check?

I'm aware of going to the DMV getting a new license and opening my own bank account and this is probably the easiest and most efficient way but what are the other options?

Before I opened my account and added direct deposit that my company offers, I use to take it to this liquor store who would cash it if you have ID. I'd recommend finding somewhere like that

Just go to a bank and try to cash it there. I'm not sure if they need any ID or not but I know they pretty much all cash checks for free. You could also try a supermarket but they almost certainly will want ID.

Many grocery stores will cash checks, but of course you'll need an ID. Most also charge a fee of some kind. Best option is to open an account at a bank, and then you'll be able to cash your checks there for free. You should be trying to save some of your money anyways.

I'll second direct deposit. It is really nice.

If you have a passport then you could use that, aside from that unless you go somewhere shady noone is gonna cash a check with no ID.

I cash checks at least twice a week, citibank in New York, few different locations, never been asked for ID. Fill out the deposit slip, give them the check too, they handle it from there.

I think its a little different than depositing it in an account with the matching name.

My school store will cash checks for a quarter. You should see if you can try something that like with your student ID.

Have you ever cashed a check at a MR.Payroll type place? They keep a picture on file. If you work at a place that moves a lot of cash in a day or something they might be able to after a busy day. Any family around with a bank account? Might not be able to cash it, but you could probably sign it over and deposit it (will take a few days). It will be basically imposable to cash a check that large w/o ID, and if you go get it renewed you typically just get a paper ID and the real one will come in the mail in 2 weeks.
Last option I can think of is grabbing everything with your name on it, bill's, student ID, SScard, car insurance card, and showing that to a bank or check cashing place.

For cashing a check, you always need ID. That way if your check turns out to be fake/stolen/etc, they know who you are. Depositing you don't because they know which account the money is going to and have a contact based on the account name. So if you deposit a bogus check, they can go after you/the account.

Also, why don't you have a bank account?

get a friend or a parent with a bank account and sign the check over to them.

you won't be able to get cash on the spot, unless the account its going into has enough to cover it until it clears.

i'd suggest going together with your friend/parent and sit with a banker real quick. explain the situation and they'll help you easily. i've done it many times for many customers. only reason i suggest talking to a banker first, is if you just hand it to the teller they might get confuzzled and shit.

worst case scenario, you'll have to wait a few days until the check clears. also, you not having ID shouldn't be an issue, since your friend/parent is basically vouching for you and they'd be held responsible if the check bounced.

edit: also, get a bank account and see if you can get a credit card at the same time. build your credit so you can get cool things like cars and mortgage loans in the future.

Save time and trouble.....

Goto the DMV and get a new id. They can give you a temp one, so you can cash your check same day
