This message was new for fishermen:
"The fish seem to be biting on chocobo flies.
    Something big hits your line!

    The fish got away"
Obviously I didn't see what it was, but I got these messages while using chocobo flies in Cassio Hollow. This was within a few minutes of fishing so it could be a regular occurrence now.

The fish seem to be biting on chocobo flies.
    Something big hits your line!
You have hooked something but cannot reel it in.
The fish has tired, but you still cannot reel it in.
    Your lure is lost.
You lost what felt like a Velodyna carp.
    This point requires further investigation.
Velodyna carp isn't terribly rare, so I'm not sure what the message means. Only second one so far.

I got the message on Helmet Crabs at a Grade-2 spot. I think it might just be a message for the generally rarer items from a given spot. I imagine you'd get the message hooking a dart frog inside Gridania.

After a second day of mining, I feel a hell of a lot better about all of this.

    • While the loot pool for each node is different from what it was pre-patch, it is consistent, and the loot pool does follow the node around.
    • Of the nodes I've tracked, each has had 5 different drops.
    • I haven't begun to track node movement, or if spawn locations are unique, or if spawn rotations are the same as pre-patch or not. It feels like there are new or changed locations though, and it feels like they can be slightly further away from the camps than before, but that is more speculation than my other notes in this post.
    • Obviously there's been some rearrangement -- it appears, for example, Darksteel is no longer a possible drop at Dragonhead. I'd love feedback about what rarer items people are seeing where.
    • I've seen no evidence the regions for raw gems have changed, but I've still a couple more camps to check out before I'm confident about that.
    • IMO, "junk" drops have no business being in grade 5, however it's possible some of that stuff might have a little more demand with the new recipes? I know I've had some people ask me for limonite again.
    • While some of the items now have a different remainder, it is consistent.
    • The rarer drops (gold ore, sand, mythril) actually seem rarer in the loot table now. Still, I'm working on a pretty small sample size.
    • I'm working on the presumption that Sharp Vision helps increase that items drop rate when at the sweet spot.
    • Basically, if you could figure out the patterns in mining before, you can do still do it now. Just have to start over... /ugh

Anyone else noticing that the "sweet spot" is continuous for all points in a zone? For instance, every time I mine in LL at 14, Iron Ore's sweet spot is 2 notches down from center. Has been for the last 9 points I've hit, it could just be my luck but... maybe someone else has also experienced this?

I collected a few more examples of the new fishing message.
[14:52:26] The fish seem to be biting on chocobo flies.
[14:52:28] Something big hits your line!
[14:52:37] The fish has tired, but you still cannot reel it in.
[14:52:46] You reel in your catch!
[14:52:50] You fish up 2 crimson crayfish +3.

[15:11:49] The fish seem to be biting on chocobo flies.
[15:11:51] Something big hits your line!
[15:12:00] You have hooked something but cannot reel it in.
[15:12:08] The fish has tired, but you still cannot reel it in.
[15:12:17] You reel in your catch!
[15:12:21] You fish up 2 crimson crayfish.

[15:15:28] The fish seem to be biting on chocobo flies.
[15:15:30] Something big hits your line!
[15:15:44] You reel in your catch!
[15:15:47] You fish up 3 crayfish.

[15:19:48] The fish seem to be biting on chocobo flies.
[15:19:50] Something big hits your line!
[15:20:02] You reel in your catch!
[15:20:05] You fish up 2 crayfish.
As you can see, the samples all occur closely together and don't appear to have any special loot associated. : /

How rare is gold sand/ore? SE fucked goldsmiths so I have to work on skilling on electrum stuff. It would cost too much to purchase so how often can I mine it? What rank can I get gold sand? I break it in 30 leves right now.

I was doing a rank-30 leve at Humblehearth and it went something like this:

something big > first jig was dead center and hit the fish > bone crayfish (rare)
something big > first jig was dead center and hit the fish > bone crayfish (rare)
something big > first jig was dead center and hit the fish > blindfish (rare)
something big > first jig was dead center and hit the fish > bone crayfish (rare)
something big > first jig was dead barely missed the fish > blindfish (rare)
something big > first jig was dead center and hit the fish > blindfish (rare)

(never moved the depth gauge from center, and I don't think I was even on any sweet spots)

Is there any evidence that the more abilities you have equipped, the more often any one of them will trigger?

I guess what I'm asking is does the game decide an ability (in the generic sense) will activate, then pick from the equipped ones? Or does each one offer it's own chance to activate (and obviously two can't fire off on the same node)?

I don't have the data to back it up but I'm definitely leaning towards the former (static chance for an ability to activate, entirely random which one).

Rank 29 was the first time I was able to mine up gold sand and mythril ore without 1 hit breaking it.

I tried equipping only Earthen Favor about a month ago and ended up going 2 hours with only 1 activation, so my money's on the later.

Yeah I would agree with most of what you are saying, in general things seem to be in the same area, but occasionally I have silver or zinc slightly out of place.

The new help text is interesting, although it definetly doesnt work 100% of the time. Normally its only useful when I get something I don't want.. then I go in the opposite direction.

Hmm. The first-hit thing seems to match with my notes except the first one, when I lost the fish, which may just be an outlier. But the rarity thing didn't work for me. I'm so tired of normal crayfish

I don't know, but I have a custom written log parser which I can use to see if there are more occurrences over time of one or the other. E.g. I can try equipping two abilities and see how much variance there is between the two over time.

Noticed new wording on the "Truth of..." series of abilities.

Truth of Seas now says "Ensures one or more crystals whenever an item is obtained by gathering."

Hmm looks like each of the "Truth of ..." abilities are different now.

I had just noticed that they changed the wording on some of these abilities. I feel like Veteran's Trade is even different (more vague) than it used to be?

Is it just me or the hints are wrong most of the times (at least in Gridania area)?

I was checking out new BTN 20 (I'm rank 23) leves in Tranquil and by following the "You sense X right/above/below where you are logging" never got the expected result.

I usually start logging one (for big trees) or two (for smaller ones) notches below the middle, mainly trying for log and branches and it works pretty good (around bloodshore and horizon): if I get branches on the first attempt there is a good chance of getting a log in one or two more tries at the same position. After I find whatever I'm looking for once, moving one notch below (or above if I'm above the middle) usually yelds the same result as the previous position.
Now, following "my" pattern I can usually go 3/3 or 3/4 for leves that ask you for straight oak log (or the like for tranquil/bloodshore), where follwing the hints always lead to junk.

I don't know what it was before, but it's now the exact same wording as the miner/botonist "aim" abilities.

Keep in mind the hints are not a guarantee of an item (which is what I thought it was at first) but help to find where that item is *somewhat* more abundant.
