    Man why is botany grade 5 so awful when it comes to gil trees? Grade 4 seemed way better. I'm currently doing Treespeak and rotating the walnut tree with oak and the dragon obsidian mining node. Dragonhead is an option too, walnut seems about the same value as yew these days due to undercutting (retarded when I have a stack of walnut up for 10k and there's about 10 other logs up 9-10k and some tard sticks a stack and a half up for 7k). What do you guys do who have both MIN and BTN in the 40s?

    I'm not liking the fact retainers stay up after maintenance. Resets helped bring prices back to normal levels for a while. Like yew was 4.5k then after a patch went back to 8k.

    Can't be bothered to dig up the source, but I'm pretty sure that the physical stats affects success rate of gathering while the magical stats affects quantity/quality or something like that.

    Indications as to which attributes are most important to classes within the Discipline of the Land can be found in-game by closely examining the gathering-related abilities obtained via guild marks. Again, for those not willing to invest that sort of time, we have listed the relationships below.

    Miner = VIT, MND
    Botanist = STR, INT
    Fisher = DEX, PIE
    Doesn't say much about exactly what they do unfortunately.

    I remember thinking MND turned out to be completely useless for miners, I could be wrong though.

    I've always been pretty sure that MND helps with gathering multiple items in a single yield like the skill "King's Yield". SE confirmed it in a recent Q&A on the official forums in Japanese: [ forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/540-ギャザラー要望スレッド?p=169472&viewful l=1#post169472 ] It's the very last question. Something along the lines of: "How does "MND" affect mining? Higher "MND" makes it easier to get increased number of items."

    Catching up on info for the first post from the past patches (in anticipation of the Q&A translation today). Added info on the following from the past patch cycle:

    April 2011 - 1.17

    When the three below conditions are met in regards to the grade and difficulty of a gathering attempt, the "sweet spot" of the approach phase will be in a fixed location.

    1. Class rank
    2. Values of VIT for miners, STR for botanists, and DEX for fishers
    3. Bait and lures (for fishing only)

    ex.) At a certain grade and difficulty, having the appropriate rank, DEX value, and bait/lure will ensure that jigging the rod precisely in the middle will result in a black eel hit.



    April 2011 - 1.17a

    Guild tasks have been added.

    By examining the new task boards found within any Adventurers' Guild, players may view and undertake the tasks of Eorzea's guilds. Obtaining and delivering the requested items will yield both rewards and skill points (awarded to the active class at time of completion).

    See I don't understand that quote about the sweet spot. I have a fishing mule that's almost rank 50(thank you isle of umbra) and she has pie and dex pumped up. For instance, fishing black sole, I always fish the 'sweet spot' which is -4 and still pull up a ton of malm kelp and hammerhead sharks. Even fishing isle of umbra for gobies I fish the sweet spot, -3, and still fish up a ton of clams, tiger cod, and kelp. So... wtf am I doing wrong to 'ensure' these hits they speak of? Sorry if this is the miner thread but I assume it would apply same when searching for similar items.

    Yeah, there's a fishing thread around somewhere, but I can try to help out. This isn't the first AIM portion of the mini-game. There's still randomness that will change up what particular item you go for on a given attempt. However, with the rights stats/level (and bait/lure for FSH), the location (the jig for fish) would be in a predetermined place. Again, can't speak for FSH, but on MIN every single item has zero randomness on where it appears in the circle (the second portion of the minigame).

    Ah ok... well still I notice a greater chance in certain spots than others but it seems random. Sole hit middle most often, left and right sometimes, and rarely anything else.

    Fishing is such an oddball gathering profession. Why the hell do I fail to hook a fish, even with a bite message (not nibble), from a grade 1 fishing spot when I'm rank 19, with relevant stats pumped way up? Not fatigued either, this isn't one-shot failing, it's failing to hook the fish.

    This is by no means exhaustive, but here's what I take as the most pertinent bits of info from the Q&As...

    They are looking at ways to increase leveling speed, although there are no plans to add new leves for gatherers in the near future. However, they may rework the reward system of current leves to allow more SP gain from them. Patch 1.18 will give an SP bonus for linking fieldcraft leves.

    They are officially defining gathering (as well as crafting) as support classes for the battle classes. It sounds as if gatherers won't be able to do main scenario missions in the future. It also sounds like there are no near-term plans to work them into battle encounters or NM fights.

    They do not intend to do any major overhaul to the gathering system (such as is happening with the battle system right now). Future changes will be adjustments to what is already in place. It's possible they might change node locations and loot pools again. They may change (and allow for more) hits per node. There are plans for more abilities “in the future”. They are also considering traits for gatherers. They are brainstorming ways to introduce very rare items to attempt to gather. Algorithms are being reworked, which may change up when/how/how hard or easy it is to get particular items.

    Rank 6 will be implemented for “gathers rank 51 and higher” … so, when the rank cap gets raised.

    Confirmation that MND helps yield multiple items.

    Quarrying (offhand gathering) is intended to be mostly luck.

    Fatigue will remain, with no indications if it will be modified at all or not.

    They are looking at ways to help gatherers avoid aggro.

    Might be a translation problem, but it does sound like then intend to let the Ward abilities eventually let you actually gain crystals while gathering.

    There are server-side optimizations being made that they believe will address lag and latency issues with gathering.

    They may (like currently happens with loot drops) eliminate +1 and +2 items, making them either NQ or +3.

    Can anyone check (I won't have time until tomorrow)... someone on the official forums is claiming that you need to hit three *mining* nodes to reset the first node now, instead of any gathering points (not sure if offhand is included in that, but using a botany node is what was specifically referenced).

    Small other tidbits:
    • At r50, gathering SP has increased about 50%. It was ~80 per success, it's now about sliver under 120. Not sure how much the bonus at lower ranks might yield.
    • I hear good things about leves, and am going to give some a try this weekend.
    • Dark matter (just like deaspected crystals) are a random extra find during a successful gather. I don't have nearly enough data yet to speculate how common they are.
    • No new tools, but at least one new piece of equipment has gathering-related stats on it. I haven't compared to any existing pieces, so no idea if it is good or not.
    • Also, reports of aggro issues at Treespeak and Halalati

    In 30k of mining grade 4 nodes, I got three Grade 4 Dark matters. About 1/400 mining attempts. Anyone else gathered any since the update?

    seems fairly random. Went mining for grade 4 dark matter as 47 miner.

    Nothing in 1 hour of mining, then took a break and came back and got 3 back to back.
