They are looking at ways to increase leveling speed, although there are no plans to add new leves for gatherers in the near future. However, they may rework the reward system of current leves to allow more SP gain from them. Patch 1.18 will give an SP bonus for linking fieldcraft leves.
They are officially defining gathering (as well as crafting) as support classes for the battle classes. It sounds as if gatherers won't be able to do main scenario missions in the future. It also sounds like there are no near-term plans to work them into battle encounters or NM fights.
They do not intend to do any major overhaul to the gathering system (such as is happening with the battle system right now). Future changes will be adjustments to what is already in place. It's possible they might change node locations and loot pools again. They may change (and allow for more) hits per node. There are plans for more abilities “in the future”. They are also considering traits for gatherers. They are brainstorming ways to introduce very rare items to attempt to gather. Algorithms are being reworked, which may change up when/how/how hard or easy it is to get particular items.
Rank 6 will be implemented for “gathers rank 51 and higher” … so, when the rank cap gets raised.

Might be a translation problem, but it does sound like then intend to let the Ward abilities eventually let you actually gain crystals while gathering.
There are server-side optimizations being made that they believe will address lag and latency issues with gathering.
They may (like currently happens with loot drops) eliminate +1 and +2 items, making them either NQ or +3.
