Holy hell they mutilated grade5 city area nodes.
nodes can pop in areas that are heavily mob infested now. and since you can't alternate bot/min for the triangle anymore, a little bad luck can make things harder. I only tried Treespeak though, but am told it's the same other places, like Jamison refers to as well.
I didn't peek at coerthas yet, but hear it is clear)

I tried treespeak just now, and it is mutilated beyond repair. The only good quarry node and the only one with storm blue scale bugs is camped by at least 10 ixali, level 49~ish, and of course they aggro you. Impossible to get to unless you mind waiting 10000 hours for random luck to put them all to the opposite side and looking away.

And on top of that, the north area is also blocked by yet more ixali, making those nodes impossible to reach as well.

And since nodes stay put once they reach near exhausted status until someone hits them and exhausts them, logic dictates eventually they will all wind up at the ixali areas and make the area unminable. <.<

I'll also state for the record that Treespeak DoL nodes aren't worth it. I made the mistake of picking up 2 leves there and I *barely* finished it. Last node had 103487138407 hogs blocking it and kept respawning near the node itself. Horrible horrible horrible.

Bleh, guess it's back to Corethas for me. Was hoping to skill up there for some Walnut to sell as well.

As someone who is skilling up on both grade 5 trees and walnut masks, the changes to treespeak have been a great disappointment. Also:

[dev1099] A record of all previously visited gathering points is now saved for each Disciple of the Land class.

I had previously thought this meant there would be some sort of marker on the maps showing the location of the nodes. However, I have heard people saying that they can no longer switch between gathering classes to quickly return to the previous node ( Log 1 tree, Mine 2 nodes, return to the tree and vice-versa). I don't have another gathering class high enough to see for myself, but maybe this was what the dev note was referring to? In other words, it saves a record of how many times you gathered on each class, thus not allowing you to gather from the same node again unless you gathered from 2 other nodes for that same class.

Sorry if this was already figured out, but I did not see it mentioned elsewhere.

Has anyone ranked up MIN/BOT in grades 1-4 since the recent patches? I'm looking for info on when it's best to move on to the next grade. I didn't know if that changed or not.

I've got my miner @ 27 right now. "Grinding" seems to be much easier (thanks to no fatigue). Been doing the occasional Grade 4's based on maps getting around 300 miner SP per successful hit. Though, I find leveling on Grade 3's and targeting Iron Ore to be the best way to grind.

Though, I could be wrong.. heh!

As rank 13 BOT, I get about 100 sp for grade 1 and about 200 for grade 2. Obviously, I get more tries at the grade 1 nodes.

EDIT: I'm apparently wrong. I just checked again:
    * grade 2 trees ~145 SP
    * grade 1 trees ~ 92-96 SP

    Apologies about the bad memory

i did BOT 10-25 the other day, i went from grade 2 to 3 at 15 with leves then ran around for an hour finding trees but then moved to grade 4 at 23 at nophica wells, using general gathering gear but swapping in padded leather feet (output+10) and velveteen coatee (output + 15?) i was able to get 3 gathers per tree and 3 harvests per harvest area, and with nophicas small area i made 23-25 in short time, this may work for mining, using ouput gear will give you more hits on nodes on grades above as well as when your about 40 and grinding grade 5 using output gear will give you 5+ gathers per node

and for those moving to nodes you get abilities and therefore recommended moving ranks are 1-8, 8-18, 18-28, 28-38. 38-50

It pretty much always better to move up and go with less attempts for more SP, even failing nets you more SP than being successful on a lower grade.

If anyone is keeping up with things, here's what I edited in to the OP:
    • Patch 1.18 - July 2011
    • Base SP for gathering is approximately 150% of what it was pre-1.18.
    • There's an additional bonus for successfully gathering an item above your rank
    • Leves are VERY good SP; a set of two can bring in over 20k SP depending on conditions.
    • Desaspected crystals are gone from gathering, but you can now randomly recieve Dark Matter
    • You can buy scrolls (with seals) from each of the company headquarters that give a bonus when gathering (up to ~5000 bonus SP)
    • There is r25 +output gear (body) in both Ul'dah's and Gridania's company headquarters. They are both very nice pieces and can get you an extra hit per node at many ranks. Test it out at each rank though, because sometimes there's no need to be wearing it.
    • Most of the grade 5 mining areas have a batch of aggro somewhere in them. Some of these zones have become very difficult to mine in. Dragonhead *might* actually be the safest place to mine now. There's talk that a future patch will introduce some sort of stealth abilities to avoid aggro.

Did I say 20k for a set of 2 leves? If you push it, 40k is possible.

I just got 34,251 from both Halatali leves. This was at r35 (the first rank they become available, and the most SP they can give), with one company scroll (should have used my second, but chose not to) and *not* having particularly good luck with Sweat of Brow.

So 5k of that 34k came from a scroll, but I could have used a second one to boost that to 39k... and with a little better luck on Sweat of Brow that would have pushed even higher. I cleared the majority of rank 35 in about 20 minutes, something that took 2-3 days of grinding when I did Miner.

Also, here's the info for the planned stealth ability, “Coeurl Step”: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/21817

I was wondering if anybody has uploaded plotted maps yet for nodes in different locations?

I feel like crafting in FFXIV requires so much databse checking that it's un-accessible to a lot of people.

That's one of the single biggest complaints about crafting. Where is the full recipe list we can load from anywhere we want? Why does the game only track the eight most recent and rewarded recipes (this is just dumb btw, nobody cares about this tab whatsoever)? Just one of those things that makes database sites an absolute requirement.

Also, I thought there was supposed to be a way to bring up nodes you've visited or w/e.

Just started and got to 20... is there anyway to make this more tolerable?

Grade 5 maps are a number of pages back.

That's in reference to the *server* keeping track, separately, of a recent node list for each gathering class. It's no longer a combined list, meaning you can't use a BOT node to reset access to a MIN node.

Here is the relevant materia for mining:

    • VIT - BODY, TOOL
    • MIND - HEAD, TOOL
    • VIT(DEX/STR) - LEGS (Ironman's Will & Watchman's Vigil)
    • MIND(INT/PIE) - LEGS (Loresman's Wit & Vestryman's Faith)
    • [Elemental] Resistance - Secondary Tool, BODY, WAIST ([Elemental] Veil)
    • Gathering - TOOL (Guerdon)
    • Perception - TOOL (Guile)
    • Output - TOOL (Grasp)

I mention Elemental Resistance only on the chance that still affects what shard type is found. More interestingly though, nothing of any use is on Hands, Feet or Waist. To me, it feels like there hasn't been much thought/balancing done with materia in regards to gathering... and at any rate every item is pretty much trivial to get right now, some stuff might help while leveling up but otherwise this doesn't do all that much good.

A shame gathering/perception/output can only go on a tool. If there was a known stat to help abilities proc more often, that would be valuable. Otherwise I guess just stack mind for multiple items.

And just to clarify, I'm listing what items a materia can be slotted on to... that doesn't make reference to what makes which materia in the first place.

Does anyone have any suggestions for using Fingerprints of the Gods? I thought I had it figured out, now I'm wasting the procs on not picking the right depth/notch/ore...

It only procs at "Schools of Fish". Use scanning to find schools. You then have to move between schools since they act just like miniing/botany nodes with limited gathering attempts.

-5 is sweet spot for fishing.

Right, but I'm kinda' doing it for all 3 classes myself to get what I need without resorting to paying 200,000 for a single catalyst. I had also found that -5 sweet spot for fishing Cretified Matter over in Nine Ivies.

However, I had found the sweet spot for mining Carbonized Matter in Horizon a few times at -2. After two nodes of finding it there, it stopped working. I am beginning to believe it moves after a few successes.

edit: in the same area, at the same grade, the sweet spot for Carbonized Matter is now +5 for me.
