The other is that gathering helps determine if an item takes 1 or 2 hits. There is some randomness, at the lower gathering range it will likely take 2, in the middle it's 50/50, at a higher range it will rarely take 2, and finally you eventually have enough for it always to be 1-hit. In some cases while ranking up, an item could take 3.
Ahh, I see. I had misunderstood you.

I bolded the part of your post that addresses what I was referring to. If your gathering stat is high enough, it will actually cause the bar to deplete faster (from my point of view) if you're striking the correct spot, which is exactly what you would want. You are correct, I was thinking it like "you must deplete the gauge to get the item" since the bar is always shown as fully depleted before the fail/success/damaged verdict is made, and I had never thought about it the other way. I can understand where you're coming from now, though. I suppose it is entirely possible that it considers your item obtained and just nixes the rest of the remainder bar displayed

Long story short, increasing your gathering to a certain point will speed your gathering since you'll be able to one-shot the items. When I initially read what you wrote, it made it sound like increasing your gathering stat would actually make you take longer to obtain the item (again, from the "you must deplete the gauge to get the item" point of view).

Speaking specifically on the topic of the distance between gathering points not being balanced throughout Thanalan, we will be making adjustments moving forward.

If there are any other locations you are concerned with, please let don’t hesitate to let us know.

Fun fact: Just finished LL grade 3, and out of the 1000 gathers, 284 of them were Aquamarines. This was with Truth of Mountains and Earthen Favor set.

Doesn't the grade 3 achievement make you want to claw your eyes out? I've done 2/3 of them, and looking at the Grade 4 + 5s is like looking up at a freaking mountain.

I'm done with all grade 1s, all grade 2, and 2/3 grade 3 achievements for botany and I calculated it out... I'm only ~12% of the way to a luminary.

Grade 5 makes me want to kill myself. At least I have the luxury of leveling Fishing while doing it, and doing Fishing so... I can just stand still... but jesus christ is it ever boring. I've literally run out of things to do with these fish too UGH

Seriously, I'm running out of things to watch while I mindlessly fish... I'm maybe 3/4s of my way to the rod. I've NPC'd thousand upon thousands of my fish, it's hard to even hold on to all the provisioning ones. Crimson Crayfish EVERYWHERE. I'm going to have to camp the company NPC big time.

It's decently long, yeah, but I'm usually watching TV or a movie while I'm doing it... and keeping some statistics has helped keep things interesting as well. I did grade 3 LL in 2 days (somewhere around/under 3 hours each day). It helps me to break it down in chunks. I'm just going to finish off LL for now (probably take a little over a week), then take a break for a while. I'd probably be done with LL if I didn't go off and do about 40% of Halatali.

Wait... you don't have to fish in schools for fishing? If so, that's flippin sweet. I'm getting that shit.

Yeah, by the wording, I didn't assume it was true, but fuck yeah. It's the only reason I'm going after it.

Failed gathers also count ('Nothing bites' does not count) toward the achievement, in case some of you missed that as well. If you really feel like half-assing it, take off all of your gear with 'gathering' stat and once you're at the jig/chop/strike phase, just turbo/spam confirm (there's one extra step for fishers though, since you guys have the 'wait' option to before the first jig).

You probably won't be hitting your target, but you'll still get credit toward the achievement without paying any attention. The removal of gathering stat is to reduce the number of failed jig/chop/strikes until the gather fails.

The above advice is much easier to use for BTN/MIN than it is for FSH because of FSH's pesky 'wait' command being default. I don't personally do this, but I'm sure someone probably is.

Botany q rather than mining, but could cover both. 48+ are people double melding the primary stat to their weapons or putting perception?

Interested to know what others are doing.

I'm assuming come 1.21 when HQ items = HQ product that you'll want to aim more for HQ items, in which perception would be a more desirable stat.

I did perception, when I finish some tests I'll decide if trying for double or triple +perception is worthwhile. MND/INT/PIE governs multiple items, and in my more limited time with botany I found that to be a little more helpful than it is on miner. I predict perception may ultimately be the gold standard stat in the future.

If only because by 50 you don't need much Output for 8 gathers, gathering is less necessary as you can 1-hit most things already, only things left to go for are HQs and multiple items (tho as mentioned, multiple items doesn't mean much for miners since anything valuable is capped at 1).

Yes, future updates and/or level cap increases could easily change what stats are needed/desired.

Man, Rod of the Luminary is an aesthetic disappointment... It's just a gold/silver skin slapped on the Gilded Rosewood rod model. ;/ It's pretty hard to tell it's anything special unless the light catches it just right to see the shinies.

Not that I think hidden effects are likely, but have you noticed anything?

Luminary tool hidden effect: decreased motivation to craft or gather!

I haven't noticed anything yet, but it definitely has made me not want to fish anymore. I'll grind away at provisioning items later and see if I notice anything sans-abilities or something.
