    Internet Connection Problems

Figured I'd ask here to see if anyone has had a similar problem or at least can narrow down whatever is wrong.

To describe the problem, randomly my internet will stop loading some sites. Right now I can bring up weather.com, google, this site, sometimes hotmail. However, I can't load things like facebook, surfline.com, or 80% of other sites, including even connecting to FFXIV(I get a timeout error when it's checking for updates). Most of the time it happens when we've had rain for a few days(which we've just had rain for a few days) although yesterday before it even started raining this crap kicked in and I couldn't load almost anything. This morning the same deal. I opened up my Verizon box outside to see if it was wet inside and there was a little moisture but nothing significant.

My ISP is earthlink DSL. I've called them about this problem before and they couldn't do anything to help me. No offense but I will NOT talk to an outsourced tech rep ever again. I've spent (no kidding here) three hours on the phone with them doing BULLSHIT things to humor them, only for them to completely break my internet and then tell me that I should give it a few hours upon which they hang up on me. To remedy that situation (which was much like this one) I ended up buying a new router and it seemly fixed the problem for the most part.

Right now I'm at a loss. The last thing I can think of is ask verizon to come out here and take a look at the box or something. It just seems to me that if this mostly occurs when it rains that it sounds like SOMETHING is getting wet and causing problems; not an earthlink problem per say. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I thought I nerd raged hard about no internet, you don't want to see my mother in the morning without it. Horror movies can be made from it.

have you asked for a line test? how do you connect to your internet, modem, router, wireless?? Sounds like you have some "noise" on your phone line and that is causing issues with your internet, or you could have a problem with the line getting exposed to water/rain and shorting out. If the issues are on your property it might be your job to get the line repaired.

We have a router set up, a few laptops on wireless, and a laptop + desktop hooked up through ethernet.

I assume I'd have to call up verizon for this line test? What department?

Edit: Simple speed test offline puts me at 335kb/s, which is what we always have.

is your isp your phone company? try connecting directly to the modem without the router and see if that helps, could be router or modem dying.

I connected directly to the modem and still the same issues. Our phone company is verizon, isp is earthlink. We had verizon before but the highest speed they offered in our area was 175kb/s, which was just lol. Earthlink was $8 more a month for 335kb/s. The place I live really sucks for good internet.

call up Verizon as they own the phone line and ask them for a line test.

Do all of the computers connected do this, or just yours?
