Choosing a Path Companion (10/01/2010) [Missions]

When players reach a certain point in the main scenario quests, they will be faced with an important decision—the selection of a Path Companion. We have prepared a simple guide to help.

At the onset of the fifth main scenario quest, players will be presented with the opportunity to select an NPC to join them in the search for truth behind the mysteries surrounding Eorzea. This NPC is known as a Path Companion., and players will be faced with several important decisions when selecting the one just right for them. After deciding on a class and nickname, players must also select the race and gender of their companion. The personality of NPC will vary greatly depending on which combination is chosen. The following is a list of the nine different types of personalities available:

Midland Hyur Male
A fine if somewhat conventional companion, possessing a strong sense of justice, an indefatigable spirit and…so on.

Midland Hyur Female
A gregarious though slightly egocentric young woman. If you can put up with her, she won’t let you down.

Elezen Male
Being a man wholly focused on his mission, this highborn fellow can seem rather curt, if not downright rude.

Elezen Female
A studious sort with exemplary manners. Serious and trustworthy, as you’d expect, but possibly a little…stiff for some tastes. Still, if you loathe over-familiarity, she may be just the companion—sorry, colleague for you.

Lalafell Male
It is said that a hero lies within us all. In the case of this rather sheltered young Lalafell, one might assume that the hero in question does so under his bed, hoping his harpy of a mother won’t think to look for him there. Will you be the one to coax him out?

Lalafell Female
Does your world want for a wealth of wordplay and wit? An abundance of alliteration, assonance aplenty and a soupcon of sibilance to seal the deal? Well, you were warned.

Miqo’te Female
A lady who knows what she likes, and likes a little bit of everything. Don’t be fooled by her coquettish manner and all-too-apparent charms; in her breast beats the fiery heart of a warrior. Not to worry, though, she’ll be gentle—assuming that’s what you like.

Roegadyn Male
When the going gets tough, it’s often nice to have a big, earnest, slightly credulous friend around—and they don’t come much bigger than this straight-talking Roegadyn.

Highland Hyur Male
Women, wine, war and women. Just four—alright, three of the things which tickle the fancy of this brute of a man. He doesn’t so much stand on ceremony as stamp on it until it stops moving.

Haha, I can see this being great, but its going to suck only being able to choose one! I at least want the option to read the dats and see what they all say!

I swear when i did this quest it felt like the Elezen i picked to help me in combat was really some kind of desperate manwhore who wanted to blow his load all over my lalafell, was kind of disturbing.

In before we find out these NPC's are active for 15 minutes every 24hrs, and have terrible AI - or some equally disappointing limitation.

They sound like they'll just be available during missions, but I haven't seen someone running around with a NPC in tow yet.

Pure speculation at this point, but it seems that since missions this time around aren't something that you do in a group (possibly due to frustrations in FFXI), you'll have your NPC to act as a party member that you never have to worry about meeting up with or coordinating with to get missions done. It would also allow for them to make the mission cutscenes a bit more cinematic, since we can be involved increasingly in these CSes.

Edit: Nah, a lot of them sound like a lot of fun.

Male Hume: Happy-go-lucky Tidus-esque Hero.
Female Hume: Spunky-yet-fiery Heroine, along the veins of Prishe/Lion/Cornelia.
Male Elvaan: Exactly like the guy in the CS, who I thought was incredibly badass and had a voice that I'd listen to again. Stuck up, dry, but still awesome.
Female Elvaan: Extremely haughty, by-the-book woman that you'll probably be able to fluster and have her rant at you. Sounds like a winner.
Male Taru: Coward through and through; would be interesting to see when he finally steps up and fights with resolve.
Female Taru: Shantoto. Nuff' said.
Mithra: Greedy, sly, clever, slutty catgirl. Nothing else needs to be said. SE knows their audience well. Lots of tongue-rolling and tail-batting.
Sea Galka: Big, jolly, loud bear of a man that you can count on for a a funny quip and a big axe when the going gets tough.
Hell Galka: Crass, surly, braggart of a man that is as crude as he is tough in a fight.

Honestly, they all sound badass. I'd rather we have the ability to summon from ALL of them whenever we're able to, and maybe even to have a fight sometime down the line where they all fight at once, with us commanding or supporting them. They all sound like the real Altana Expeditionary Force of this game.

So far the missions are good, but I can't get any new one yet @ 26, makes me sad. Getting to 30 is going to suck bad ><;
