How do you deal with a team already over the cap then?

There are two things in place that are sorted out and calculated around July: The Salary Cap for the season and the Tax Level. It's some crazy formula but it turns out that in the end a number for the Salary Cap is set. For the 2010-2011 NBA season, the Salary Cap was set at $58 Million which applies to all teams. This cap is actually a soft cap meaning there is some wiggle room to go over it before you have to pay Luxury Tax. The so called "wiggle room" or Tax Level is also defined by a formula and for the 2010-2011 season, it is about $70 Million.

When a teams payroll goes over the Tax Level, they have to pay dollar for dollar the overage to the NBA. So if this season, a teams payroll is $90 million, the owner has to pay the league $20 Million dollars in Luxury tax. The Luxury Tax from teams that went over are added up and evenly divided amongst teams that did not go over the Tax Level which gives owners an incentive for not going over the limit.

Of course there are exceptions to the Salary Cap (Larry Bird exception) but that's pretty much what happens when a team goes over the cap.

The owners want a Hard Cap system which is set somewhere around $45-50 million. The players are fighting this because it means they will loose out on a lot of money. If you look at the Lakers, their payroll is $91 Million this year ($21 Million Luxury Tax). Kobe makes $24 million, Gasol makes $17 Million, and Bynum makes $13 million. Just with those 3 players they are at/over the hard cap already. If they did it based on percentages at a $50 mil hard cap, the adjusted salary would be:

Kobe: $ 12 Million
Gasol: $9 Million
Bynum: $7 Million

You can see why they wouldn't want this new system as they'd loose half their money.

Triple-double is a statistical oddity. 2 points in the 4th is shrinking in the 4th for 3 straight games.

DALLAS -- Dirk Nowitzki's sinus infection and the ensuing storyline apparently was a source of amusement for Miami Heat superstars Dwyane Wade and LeBron James before Game 5.

As they walked out of American Airlines Center after Thursday morning's shootaround, Wade and James pretended to cough and wheeze, smirking as they repeatedly covered their mouths with their shirts while being filmed by Miami CBS affiliate WFOR.

"Whoa, did y'all hear me cough? I think I'm sick," Wade said before turning toward James and chuckling.

This came two days after Nowitzki scored 21 points, including a critical driving layup in the last minute, while playing with a 101-degree fever during the Dallas Mavericks' NBA Finals-tying Game 4 win.

Wade had already made it clear that he believed the story of Nowitzki playing through illness and injury -- the Mavericks' superstar tore the tendon in his left middle finger in the series opener -- had been overblown.

"I have respect for him as a great player. I'm not going to get into the injuries," Wade said Wednesday. "Everyone is injured at this time. I'm not going to get into the fun-loving story of him being sick, either. Once you show up on the court, you show up on the court. Everyone is equal.

"He's a great player without all the dramatics of the stories that's been going on."
